okie-dokie, how about long distance tour type busses?

i cycled across laos six months ago, and recall seeing some

sort of long-distance tour busses carrying chinese tourists.

thought they were running from somewhere in china - meng la?

jing hong? to somewhere in thailand.

not quite the rolling disco/ktv partymobiles seen on highway 1 out

of bangkok, but comfortable modern coaches.

Great idea, ChouDoufu. :)

These buses are probably chartered tour buses. But maybe you can hop on one of these. Maybe as an entertainer :D

Anyway if you know more and do that, let us know!!

OK the best I've come up with is http://www.travelblog.org/Topics/8031-1.html

Getting to Vientiane is no problem. It looks to me like you need to go there and check with travel agents.

travelfora that aim at real travellers have the info-since years and years.

VIP means nothing in Thaild-its just to fob ignorant farang. in Laos and China is completely meaningless.

But from BKK to Kunming, in Yunnan, its really possible by bus with just 1 change-in ViengChang, lao';s capital. From there a daily chinese sleeperbus (you have to seen one of these to believe...) dept.s for KMing-around 17/18.00-takes 2 nights-the day in between for over half spent at border checks. These is just 1 road-and in China its for 80% a dual motorway/expressway. Thus start from BKK eve day 1-VTE-day 2-borders-day3-arr. KMg morning day 4.

Coming from Cmai/CRai: bus to Ch.Kong-ferry on over.then 2 buses daily (not VIP) via a much improved road toards the north of Laos-Luang nam Tha (detailed here a few dozen times)-change-bus to border, China side is named Mengla-and has several same type sleeperbuses to Kming. total cost, rough estimate, 40-50US$/1500-2000THB.

If you fancy comfort more-take the 2/weekly boat Chiang saen to JingHong in China-bypasing laos-and take any of the dozens+more of same type sleeperbuses onward.

Meaning travel forums? :)

'VIP means nothing in Thaild-its just to fob ignorant farang'

Most VIP buses are used for charters by Thai groups pai-ing thee-ow. Or at least that is true in the provinces of Isaan.

recently returned from laosland....

VIP buses from huay xai:

H.X.->Mongla 6hrs, leaves 8:30 am. 150,000K or B600

H.X.->Jinghong 9hrs, leaves 7:30 am 190,000K or B775

china visa required.

also found there are VIP buses from (or maybe starting in vientiane?)

luang prabang to kunming.

There are buses to KunMing from Vientiane (at the San Jiang Shopping Mall). Not sure about the pricing and the bus schedules though but looking at the distance iwould say its a LONG ride
