george
Women surf Internet more than men BANGKOK: -- Women are surfing the Internet more than men and more Internet users are reading news online, according to an annual survey. Conducted by the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre (Nectec), the survey covered 11,991 Internet users from August to October last year. Several major websites such as the Nation Group, Pantip.com, Sanook.com, Siamsport.com, Truehits, Kapook.com, Dek-D.com, PaySBuy, and Thai e-Commerce Association participated in the survey. Among the major findings were: n Most Internet users are women (72.5 per cent) n Most users access Internet from home (52.3 per cent) between 8pm and 12pm n Most of them are aged between 20 and 29 years n Most of the users connect to the Internet via ADSL n Most of the users stay online 20 hours per week on average. Nectec director Pansak Siriruchatanapong said the survey, in its fourth year, showed the demographic profiles of Internet users are mostly similar to the previous years. They are mostly in Bangkok; are graduates with a bachelor's degree; and are employed. Another significant finding was that even though ADSL remains the major channel for Internet connection, its role has slightly reduced. The percentage of Internet connections via mobile phones has been increasing from only 2.8 per cent in 2007 to 7 per cent in 2008 and to 10 per cent in 2009. Though most of the Internet users live in Bangkok, the percentage of Internet users from rural areas is increasing from 18-19 per cent to 21 per cent. The top three online activities over the Internet are still information searching; e-mail; and news consumption. But in depth, the percentage of these three activities have reduced. Interestingly, e-learning - as the fourth activity - has surged significantly from only 0.1 per cent in 2007 to 4.1 per cent in 2008 and 8 per cent in 2009. The top five most popular online news beats were politics, social issues, entertainment, technology, and economics. Internet users still prefer to buy books, make reservations, and buy clothes and accessories online. Most of them make e-commerce transactions of Bt5,000 or less. And the top three issues related to the Internet are the same as in the previous year - virus, speed, and pornography. -- The Nation 2010-01-18 [newsfooter][/newsfooter]

bendejo
Check out any of the internet places in lower Suk. The girls who work in these places help the customers write emails explaining how they are hopelessly in love, and the impending catastrophes that will occur if they don't send $$$ soon, like NOW! Most of these girls have mailing lists of farang bozos they hit up regularly. If you use a computer in one of these places there's a good chance the previous user didn't log out of her email account, then you can check out her sent messages and see the bs she sends out to her punters. And then of course there is chat, dating sites, etc. and a never ending supply of new chumps to ply. There's one born every minute. And where are the young Thai men? Getting drunk and doing macho posturing. Edited January 20, 2010 by bendejo
nikster
You're right about the young Thai men - the bright ones leave, the others stay and get drunk. But for the women there's a much more boring explanation than the bargirl one - at the University most students seem to be female. I don't know why to be honest, but it seems like it's 70% women. Since we can assume everyone at uni uses computers, that's a good match for the study, the age group 20 - 29 fits perfectly as well. The female students I know spend all their time on facebook, before that Hi5 and myspace but those are now obsolete. While the working girls obviously need to stay in touch with their clientele, I don't think they'd make up more than 1% in a random sample study. Well - unless the study was conducted in Pattaya Edited January 20, 2010 by nikster

If you are talking to a Thai woman on the internet ask her for her phone number and call her immediately and you will see that what I say is true. Save your time, your money and your heart ache.
