Very Specific Tourist Visa "jocky" Question

Recommended Posts

G'day all..

Hoping to to find out how and if my ideal future plan will work, and to have any 'blanks' filled in...

This is what I want to do/asumed was possible...

I'm a Canadian citizen who is now in Canada but lived in Thailand in 2001 for 8mthns having to 'border run' every 30days to get the typical entry stamp. Luckily I had a girlfriend in Loas so this flip flop was ok for my life at the time.

I am planing to come back to Thailand this fall 2005 and stay for 9-12 months with some time also in Loas and Cambodia. Is this Visa stituation fisable and whats the status on anyone doing it like this :

1. Get a 60day (extnd to 90day) Tourist Visa here in Canada from Thai Consul in Ottawa..

2. After the 3 months on this visa go over to Cambodia and stay in Phenom Phen for a few weeks and apply for another 60day Tourist Visa at the Thai Embasy... Im wondering how easy it is to get accepted for another one at this point?

3. Assuming I get the second Visa in Cambodia after this second 3 month stint back in Thailand I would then go maybe to Loas for 2wks or a month and apply for a thrid 60day Tourist visa at the Thai Embassy in Vientien.

Basically i'm looking for feedback, the in's and out's as to what/where/when/ how of this method??

I do know I could probably find the info by search and digging into the forum but I am looking for more current opinions and 'walk thrus'

Thanks in advance!

Fanta.

Not sure how "user friendly" the Embassy/Consulate is in Canada but the optimum for you would be a Non Immigrant O visa mutiple entry based upon visiting family and friends in Thailand........this would give you 90 days stay at a time up to a maximum total stay of close to 15 months (border runs every 90 days obviously)

Failing the above apply for a double entry tourist visa......this will give you 60 day stay upon arrival which can be extended 30 days at local immigration, then a quick trip over the nearest border to utilise the 2nd entry and with it a further 60+30 days stay.

Once both entries are used up the best bet would be a trip down to Penang Malaysia for a new double entry tourist visa (no problem in Penang). Phnom Phen do not have a reputation as being helpful.

Edit............if you obtain the double you can plan your Cambodia trip at the end of the first 90 days stay and your Laos trip after 9 months i.e halfway into the second double visa you obtain in Penang. The second double entry visa may be obtainable in Laos........but i wouldnt like to guarantee it.

Toronto is reasonably user friendly IME!

:D

Agreed ... Ottawa is the Embassy and not too user friendly :o

Ok Toronto it is.. even though I have some thai friends in the bangkok area, I really dont think the non immigrant 'o' visa is the option for me.. so the double entry tourist is the play! What do I then need to do/send to ensure success with Toronto consul...(esentially whats the drill).. should I go in person? adress anyone?? also when thaiflyer says 'border run' at the end of the first 90 days is it just an in and out based on the double enrty visa already koser in my passport? So could I spend the month in cambodia at that point and then come back in the other 90days straight up after??

Thanks again so far for helping me start to sort through some of this 'red tape' I knew was going to muck up my ideals. Great to have a forum to kick strategy around.

Yes you can go to Cambodia for a month then come back in..........just make sure when you get the double entry in Canada it has a 6 month validity in which to use both entries............the validity runs from date of issue not when you enter Thailand so dont apply too early for it (within last 30 days before departure is fine)

Suspect you can apply by mail for the visa in Canada...........maybe somebody can confirm this.

Actually i'll have to time it very close to departure as I have to stop in Europe for 6wks or so before Thailand.. so it would be close.. get visa 2wks before depart/6wks europe/3mnths thailand/1month cambodia.. its tight but i like the presure..feelin'spy gamesque'.

The only mysterys left is the protocol/procedures for scoring the douple tourist visa from Toronto. anyone?

The doubles are routine just write or give them a ring requesting an application form for a tourist visa..............unfortunatley Toronto Consulate doesnt appear to have a website.

Edit ...... if you want an idea of what the app form looks like do a google search for the Vancouver Consulate they have the form online...........it has Vancouver emblazened on it so is little use when applying to Toronto however.

a double entry isn't rocket science. Simply apply by mail.

OK, i guess i'm comming across as a little to rudimentary, sorry, but what i really want to know is success rate.. bacially if the forum is filled out correct, i'll get the visa?

feel free all to let go of babys hand if you dont want to humor me anymore..

No reason why you shouldnt be granted the double as i said its quite routine............as i said before just make sure it has a 6 month validity when you recieve it.

ok got it.. thanks boys.. oh yah and if it didnt have a six month validity then what would it have?? 4months? 5? or would it then mean that they had issued me only a single entry tourist visa?? have others had problems with this, mistakes on consul's part??

khap khun.. jai dai la

The norm is for a single entry to have a 3 month validity and a double to be allowed 6 months to use both entries.

Edit.........some Consulates quote 90 days rather than 3 months.

"I'm a Canadian citizen who is now in Canada but. . . "

I hope that you'll keep us informed of your progress!

Like you, I plan on moving to LOS in the not-too-distant future, and I, too, will be dealing with the Toronto Consul.

I'd bell them personally (depends on how much time you have) and ask them if they have a website with the application form on etc. or if they need to mail it to you etc.

Persevere (sp?) as it can take a bit of effort to get in touch with them:

Royal Thai Consulate-General

Scotia Plaza, 41 King Street, West

41st Floor

Toronto, Ontario M5H 3Y4

Canada

Attention: Vice Consul William A. Dickinson

Phone Numbers: (416) 367-6750, (416) 367-6235

Fax: (416) 361-7074

There's no need to go in inperson IME!
