I know times have changed but some years ago i was involved with a female whose friend made a decent living/profit from selling lottery tickets.

She was licenced to buy government lottery tickets and when she did she distributed them to her ten or so street sellers who sold them for 90 baht keeping 10 baht on every purchase but if they could get more than 90 baht then the extra went into their pocket.

At the time she bought the tickets for 40 baht each but like i said times have changed and now-a-days they might cost more.

Here in Pattaya the selling price by most is 110 baht.

about 6 months ago here in BKK the sellers tried to raise the price to 110 overnight. There was a large outcry and somebody stepped in.

now I believe they sell for 80-90 baht. Never have won a baht on these things.

Why can't we have lotteries like in the west? 6/49 powerball types?

I have often wondered the samething. But more than likely there are too many hands in the pie with the current set-up. Trying to change it would be very difficult.

Also, the lottery is just 1 dollar (32 baht) in the states. That is a long way from 100 baht a shot in Thailand.

Well it would put many lottery vendors out of business and we could forgo imagining what numbers exist inside those little not so transparent ball that get opened.

Very simple. The illegal operators would not have the bankroll for it, therefore they are able to use their power to prevent the government legal lottery from operating at that format. Plus, even with the required bankroll how is the illegal lottery going to transfer 35 million baht to someone every other week without setting up a crystal clear pair trail?

Funny how the world's two greatest, recession free businesses are always so tightly regulated by the government. Prostitution and Gambling. Gambling is like selling someone a nickle for a dollar and prostitution, well, lets see, a 50/50 cut and all the house has to do is provide change the sheets and pay the water bill. :)

The wholesale price is 80 THB. This is the price that those lucky few wealthy distributor/concessionaires pay in bulk. They then re-sell these down the supply chain, with each level making subsequently less and bearing more risk (in perishable inventory). The retail price is 110 THB, with the exceptions being bulk packs and last-minute sales.

They don't have to match the payout (the same way they don't have to match the payout now).

There have been a few cases in the west of folks offering (and later getting busted, although like anything else, there are surely surviving rackets out there) underground type drawings based on the actual pick 6 type results.

It'd just be another "game" they could offer underground to their current customers.

A casino is the answer to all of Thailand's problems.

I'm afraid it is not. Many Thais are addicted to gamling, and play away everything they have. They end up on the streets as drug addicts, and criminals I don't think Casinoes will make it better, rather worse.

True but you must admit it would cut down on the commute to Poipet?

Yes but more revenue and tea money and expense accounts and bonuses for the Thai government officials. :)

Not a bad markup for rather flimsy slips of paper.

:)

Indeed, provided you have the connections to gain the rights to purchase x million tickets direct from the GLO.

The actual people on the bikes in the hats make around 25 satang on each ticket sold so I have read in the Bangkok Post.

The ticket comes in two 40 bht parts and you have to buy both so anything above 80 bht is going in someone's pocket.

One woman sitting outside the bank tried to hit me up for 130bht, farang price.

Needless to say I passed.

The wholesalers have lower margins, they just get to deal in quantity. Bike and pedestrian peddlers can move tickets with popular numbers for 20-30 Baht over cost, but that doesn't really compare to wholesalers making 3-9 Baht per ticket x a few to several hundred thousand tickets per drawing.

:D

Considering the fact that lottery tickets are just another form of tax on the poor and stupid, I have to agree with Heng. At least with a plain piece of paper you have something to write a note on.

Example:

Thailand.

A lottery ticket costs 110 baht and the maximum payout on your six numbers coming up is 6 million baht on two winning tickets.

Then comes the scam in that when you collect your winnings you are subjected to tax.

My misses recently won 4000 baht and had to pay 200 baht tax or 50 baht on every 1000 baht winnings.

Comparison.

England.

One lottery ticket costs 1-pound or 52 baht at today’s exchange rate.

If you hit the big one your in for a windfall in excess if 1 million pounds or just over 19 million Thai baht.

The tax is set at zero as 5 pence tax is collected at purchase.

That makes the Thai lottery both expensive and piss poor by comparison.

Some years ago the shit hit the fan in Thailand when the lottery organizers won the big jackpot. It caused an outcry and some paid the money back but others didn’t and as far as I know it’s still being run by the same people.

Why is it necessary to buy 2 identically numbered tickets ? Why can't we buy just one? Tickets incidentally are printed with their price - 40bt! If the government want to stop the illegal lottery they would cap the sale price of the lottery ticket at 40bt -no exceptions.

There is no tax on winnings. Take your winning ticket to the lottery office in Bangkok and you will be paid in full. Upcountry, winnings can be collected from traders who take a minimum 3% commission.

It's all a bloody scam!

That wouldn't stop the illegal lottery. They'd have to offer an identical game 500/600 to 1 and 250-300 to 1 payouts on two and three digit selections (straight, mixed, etc. as well) and yes, ON CREDIT also. Will never happen.

The correct price is 80 baht for a ticket. A ticket is usually two tickets at 40 baht each joined together.

Stationary street vendors sell them for 100 baht.

Peripatetic street vendors sell them for 105-110 baht. Usually 110 baht to farang.

'Hot numbers' sell for 120-150 baht.

'Hot numbers' are superstitious numbers for which demand is high.
