I'd like to take an extended trip to Monaco and possibly live there. Problem is last time I was there I had several run ins with the police. I was never charged with any crime and released quickly each time I was arrested - though when I left two cops drove me to a train station in France, told me to wait for the next train in 90 minutes, get on it, punched me in the face and told me if i ever came back to Monsco I would "finish in the sea"

These guys serious? Never thought of Monaco as a corrupt place. Jail I can handle. Murder I cannot. Maybe they were just trying to scare me? Anybody I can contact to see if I can return?

Thanks for any advice. This is 100% real and occurred in May of 2009.

Firstly you cannot live in Monaco unless you have a home (for which you need both authorization and €€€€€) or work there (which I doubt to be easy for non Monégasque)

Secondly you seem to have been expelled from that Principality but you can go back there whenever you like (as you said you have not been charged with anything) and, as you know, there is no checkpoint as Monaco is "part" of France

It would be a problem if you meet your friends again (as you seem to be crossing their path on a regular basis when in the city)

Or, maybe, you simply are Person Non Grata but...only you know about it

Advice: find a home in Grasse or Saint Tropez. I would not advise Nice or Cannes. Anyway, if you have got the means I can direct you to some interesting properties :)

Apart from that, you sound quite funny :D

I wont get into the details of why but if I went back it would be highly unlikely I would have any run-ins with the police again. So if what they meant was 'if you come back again tonight' or 'if you come back and pull this shit again' then it wont be a problem. Though it seemed pretty clear that I was being told never to return. It was actually the second time I was told that - once the day before, but in a much nicer way. About four cops came to my hotel room, told me to pack up all of my things, put me in handcuffs and forcibly took me downstairs, put me in a taxi and said specifically that I was never to return to Monaco again. I said what about my children and they said my children can come, but I can never come back. No violence and once I was out of the hotel and out of the handcuffs they were actually pretty jovial and nice - but they still said never come back. Though I came back the next day, got in more trouble and they told me harder...

If I were to live in another place it would be Antibes without doubt, but I really like Monaco. I have friends who have obtained citizenship there and live there - I think I could pull it off, or at least have a good chance at it.

They never stamped my passport persona non grata so I don't think they would have any legal right to tell me not to enter the country - but if they said they would kill me if I came back, they don't sound like a group who are much concerned with the law.

My question is really are the Monaco police capable of doing something like that? The country seems pretty civilized. Though maybe given the rich and famous who live there the police take a harsh no-nonsense approach to undesirables? They appear to have nobody to answer to other than the UN etc, right? Or could France hold them accountable for committing a crime like this?

Monaco is very civilised because there are almost as many Police as residents. if you drive through it and stop your car for more than a few moments a Policeman is likely to ask you what you are doing (unless driving a Ferrari!)

You have to have very large amounts of money to breath the air let alone buy a property.

If you can afford to live there I would suggest you get one of your employed legal staff on to it as I am sure you will be a very wealthy individual. if so good luck to you!!!

I saw condo's for under 1,000,000 euro's. Not cheap but not crazy expensive either. hel_l they have plenty of condo's in Bangkok that sell for more than that.

Get a lawyer. The best one is Harvey (From TMZ) He won't come cheap though but you will get the filming creq

Obviously you were joking but if I could get TMZ to believe my story, it seems going back with their camera crew would probably be about the safest possible thing I could do, next to having Barack Obama escort me or something. Anything that documents the fact that I am there and can't just disappear.

Yantree, please DO go into the details of why you were thrown out of Monaco. I'm sure many of us are interested to know why you had these problems. I never had an issue on the many occasions I visited Monaco...

Possession of a small amount of marijuana and cocaine was the first problem, the others could all be termed loosely 'disturbing the peace'. I brought all of the problems upon myself and the police were very understanding, right up until the part where they threatened to kill me that is...

Very surprised I was never charged with a crime. The following were how they dealt with me on each occasion:

-Arrested me, brought me to police headquarters, questioned me, informed me they would not be filing drug charges and let me go

-Arrested me, brought me to police station, put me in a cell for maybe twenty minutes then let me go (happened several times)

-Put me in handcuffs, drove me to the end of a dark road in Monaco then told me to get out and left me there

-Told me to pack up all of my belongings, put me in handcuffs then put me in a taxi and told me never to come back to Monaco

-Put me in handcuffs, drove me to a train station in France, told me to get on the next train and never come back or they would kill me

Again, all completely my fault. They were not looking to bust me and other than the death threat I would give them an A+ overall.

Don't worry

Go back there Nothing will happen to you but before doing so quit drinking, smoking taking drugs

By the way which hotel did you stay at?

Also I am not quite sure you are allowed (as a nobody, no offence meant- mind you they seem to know and appreciate you already) to buy anything on the Rock

The first hotel I don't remember the name of it. It was like 400 Euro's per night and at the base of a pretty upscale mall, if that helps. The second was Le Meridian next door to the Monte Carlo Bay Resort.
