So Wales come back and beat Scotland with the last phase of play.

Rugby Union rules state that the referee cannot blow the final whistle until the ball is dead.

It also states that if a kick off/restart is kicked directly into touch then the opposing team have the choice of a retaken kick or a scrum, with put in, on the half way line.

Which of these rules overrules the other. IE if Scotland had put the restart straight into touch would the game have ended there and then at 24 apiece?

i would think that if it was full time, it would be at the refs whistle when to blow full time and since the ball went dead after kick off, he blew full time, but if the game was at 79 mins, the ref would have no choice but to give the opponents (Scotland) the choice of scum, kick off again or throw in.

in many games you see the leading team kick for touch as soon as the hooter sounds full time, knowing the ref will likely blow full time, i guess Wales tried to do the same from the kick off.

Vice versa, Donny boy. The 80 minutes passed while the ball was being brought back for the re-start. Scotland kicked off - all I can think is that Mike Blair believed that if he kicked it out of the stadium Wales would get a free kick / scrum, so instead he kept the ball in play, Wales took the ball and went on to score a try to win the game.

My understanding is that since it would not have been a penalty (the game is never stopped prior to a penalty) then the game would have stopped; but then, maybe the ball would not be considered dead?

I can't believe that he thought we were going to recover possession, or turn the ball over, to win the game, with only 13 men left on the pitch, when we'd been under such pressure for the last quarter.

Some they win, some we lose.

C'est la vie, as the Irish would say

Just found a couple of quotes on the BBC website that should clear up my original question:-

Andy Robinson

Robinson then said his players had "committed suicide" by not going straight for touch from the kick-off with the time at 80 minutes after Jones' score-tying penalty.

"The guys still felt they could have gone for the victory, but with the numbers down it was difficult," Robinson said. "If they kick straight out, the game was over."

John Beattie

Max Evans nearly intercepted for another long-range score. Chris Cusiter missed touch with a penalty, Dan Parks missed a drop goal and the final drop kick should have been put directly to touch as the game would have ended there and then, whereas Wales went up the pitch and scored.

I read those quotes as well, but neither speaker is a qualified referee. Furthermore, I'm not sure how relevant the opinion of other referees is either, since as I understand, the referee on the park is the sole judge of fact.

I share their opinion, but I would hope that the player could have queried with the referee prior to taking the kick-off...

Jonathan Davies came out with a specific rule after the French/Wales game, ( Michalak kicked straight out from the restart ) and he said that if a player deliberately kicks it out in this manner, he will be yellow carded and a penalty awarded.

However, how can you prove he deliberately kicked it out and not just miss-kicked it, that is the dilemma.

I'm guessing that it's either Law 10.2(a) which allows a penalty for deliberate infringement of any Law (in the case, Law 13.8 regarding the restart landing in the field of play) or Law 10.4(m), of acts contrary to good sportsmanship. However, as you say, how could you prove it?

Also, Davies is an objectionable whinger, so I have little interest in what he says.
