Hey guys. My wife wants to stay a few nights in a hotel room that is on stilts over the ocean. She's previously stayed on the bungalows on floats in/near Khao Sok, but really wants to sleep "above" the ocean, simliar to what you see in Tahiti and the Maldives.

Does any such thing exist in Thailand? Doesn't need to be 5 star, even 1/2 star would probably work.

I'd read in a book that Koh Wai had such a thing (albeit with only partial electricity and no windows and the occasional rat) but couldn't find any details online and the book didn't include any info other than it was a tiny resort on Koh Wai.

If not in Thailand, anything nearby or in a fellow ASEAN country? My wife is Thai and would be traveling on a Thai passport which can make getting a visa hard for a lot of countries.

That made me laugh!! :)

Google you will find plenty of places in Thailand

Kho Chang used to have many..but the developers have moved in and it was 10 years ago.i think on the islands you will find exactly what you are looking for.

Stayed in one in Si Racha between Bangkok and Pattaya about 10 years ago.

Was pretty low budget and cheap, still remember flushing the bog and all the waste went straight into the sea!!!!!

There were quite a few gh type accom. out over the sea in those days, guess they're all still there.

I wish. Maybe its just my Google-Foo is weak, but I either get listings in Thailand that aren't on stilts (and in some cases, aren't even near the beach) or I get the usual suspects in Tahiti, etc.

My wife even searched in Thai and couldn't find anything.

Thai Visa was my last resort (posting the question here is almost as bad as having to stop my car and ask for directions). Looks like there's a few leads to follow up on, and hopefully some more will get posted in the next day or two.

There isnt anything like that on Koh Wai. On Koh Chang the ( recently declared illegally built ) Bangbao Sea Huts fits the bill and there are a couple of other guesthouses on the pier, but you wont be swimming in the sea anywhere near Bangbao village.

If you want to be near the beach then our guesthouse is built over the water on the Klong Prao estuary, nowhere else like it on the west coast of the island & the quietest stretch of beach on the west coast is 150 metres walk though the coconut trees or 200m paddle by canoe.

As a Thai, I was looking for that type of accommodation in Thailand as well and could not find any.

Then again even if there is one, I am not sure if I can trust that they can manage waste properly so I would not want to support them.

Anyway, many Thais have been to Maldives so I don't think it will be particularly difficult for your girlfriend to get a visa to go there if she really wants to stay in that type of accommodation. I'd say the problem is money (at least for me :) ).

I'm in the same boat. I don't look forward to paying $500+ per person for airfare and hotel for a few days, and was hoping we could find something a little cheaper and closer to home.

In Hua Hin we stayed at a place that was on stilts or maybe a pier. If its on a ocean it would be more like a Pier. it was located near the Hua Hin Hilton

If you go down the road in front of the hilton against the one way it will tee go to the right about 50 meters. I think it was on the lonley planet guide about 600 Baht per night

I wil try and find

No oceans near Thailand, op. There's one or two seas though or perhaps you could try out the River Kwai:

there is a new development on Koh Chang which was being constructed last year and may now be complete. You have to go to Long beach, go past New Treehouse beach huts, and then drive a further 10mins and take a left turn onto new tarmac for the last 1km. The road to Long Beach is very poor and you really need a 4x4 but I have done it with great care in a saloon. The benefit is it is a very secluded part of the island

Sorry, I don't know the hotel's name (not very helpful I know -it wasn't open back then) but thought others may have seen it. It was built but not open when I was there end August last year. Basically, there was a walkway which linked individual high quality bungalows and there were colourful fish swimming below.

It is a very very peaceful and remote area of the island with one or two local places and great views. you can take a small boat to local beaches and other small hotels in that part of the island.

There was one in Phang Nga Bay- It's called Koh Panyi. Muslim fishing village in the middle of the bay. You take a long tail boat out and enjoy your time. There some shops there and and a few restuarants. Here's a link. http://www.phuket-traveltips.com/koh-panyi.htm The one thing I remember was they could be a little pushy in the shops but I was there right after the tsunami and they were hurting a lot.
