Red shirts moving for a showdown: Jatuporn

BANGKOK: -- March will likely be the month to stage a showdown designed to force the collapse of government within seven days, red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan said on Tuesday.

The date for showdown is likely to be decided by Wednesday, he said.

"About one million people are expected to attend the rally and the protest will definitely not drag on to Songkran," he said, allaying fear for a repeat of mayhem last April.

The crowds will surge to fill Sanam Luang and line along Rajdamnoen Avenue up to the Royal Plaza, he said. Some 100,000 pick-up trucks will be mobilised to transport the red shirts and park around the rally site in a show of force.

Great! The Final Countdown

Interesting the last time a million Thais gathered together was in June 2006, during celebrations for the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne when 1 million turned out to hear HM give only the third public address of his reign.

That would make them transport 10 people per truck, unless they should take several trips. Or people should come in their own cars etc.

I don't think they have any clue how many people 1 million is. Or how to organize anything as big.

This is like the 3rd final showdown, or is it higher than that?

Thailand - the Hub of Final Showdowns!

This upcoming March rally will be the fourth "Final Countdown".

*edit.

Upon further review, it's the third "Final Countdown" as the other million-person rally was titled "Do Or Die".

Make the madness stop, perhaps as a start we could remind whoever is behind of this of the following:

Final

Noun

* S: (n) final (the final match between the winners of all previous matches in an elimination tournament)

* S: (n) final examination, final exam, final (an examination administered at the end of an academic term)

Adjective

* S: (adj) concluding, final, last, terminal (occurring at or forming an end or termination) "his concluding words came as a surprise"; "the final chapter"; "the last days of the dinosaurs"; "terminal leave"

* S: (adj) final, last, net (conclusive in a process or progression) "the final answer"; "a last resort"; "the net result"

* S: (adj) final, last (not to be altered or undone) "the judge's decision is final"; "the arbiter will have the last say"

Edit:

Oh drat!! I just read that again... they didn't actually state "final" just a 'showdown", so expect more madness for months to come...

and how many Portaloos will they be providing? Or will some of the pickup trucks be designated for the purpose?

Why the need for Portapotties? The Reds don't give a <deleted>.

Good point. There are way too many showdowns going on. It's ruining the country and corrupting the youth. I suggest it's time for a crackdown on showdowns.

A million people for a day would be one expensive bill for Thaksin.

My fag packet calculation 100,000 (pick ups) * 2,000 baht = 200 million baht, 900,000 (red shirts) * 200 baht = 180 million baht.

Total cost 380 million baht for the day..... ker ching...

Ahead of the mass rally in the capital, mobile units of red shirts will lay siege at Army bases to block the troops from staging a coup or cracking down protesters.

The targetted bases include those of the 2nd Infantry Division in Prachin Buri, the 21st Infantry Regiment in Chon Buri, the 31st Infantry Regiment in Lop Buri and the 9th Infantry Division in Kanchanaburi.

Last time there were lots of Thais going to Bangkok, were at the time when HMK were ill and people wanted to whish him well. From many cities around the country, the local governments arranged buses for transportation from villagers to BKK. I know a woman who went there with her family.

At Bangkok, there were a large crowd gathered. Among those in the crowd, there were some people talking to others, asking how much they got paid to come here. They asked that question to that woman as well. She replied: -Got paid? I didn't get paid! I came here because I wanted to. Then the other guy replied: -That's strange. I got paid 300 Baht + free food by some people with yellow shirts to come here.

That was a lie of course. They were sent out to spread false propaganda among the arrived people. The woman (my friend) went very angry. In fact so angry that she voted for a guy from the Red Shirts in the recent local election a month or so ago. She didn't vote for that guy just because she agreed with his party. She did that just because she went angry, believing what she was told last time in Bangkok.

So, I wonder how many more of these people around the country that have been "captured" with help of false propaganda and lies. My guess is that's probably a lot.

you underestimate that!

The rate to get 1.000.000 is more than 200 Baht. 300 maybe more.

You need to feed them, which is at least another 60 Baht per day. All the leaders and subleaders get more money.

when there is so much money around at least half get lost in corruption.

I think it will be close to 1.000.000.000 Baht per day. But we speak about 76.000.000.000 Baht.

He could easily run it 1 week and it is still a small fraction

Red Shirts vow to topple government in 7 days in March mass rally

BANGKOK: -- (TNA) - A key leader of Thailand's anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) on Tuesday announced that the group will rally in March with at least one million Red Shirt supporters joining the protest to oust the Abhisit Vejjajiva government within seven days. Red Shirt leader Jatuporn Prompan said the movement's key leaders will meet Wednesday to set the date for their mass rally next month.

Mr Jatuporn said the Red Shirt mass rally will not extend to the traditional Thai New Year Songkran Festival, and expressed confidence that the UDD rally will be able to topple the Democrat-led coalition government within seven days.

He said one million UDD demonstrators, supported by 100,000 pickup trucks, will join the mass rally to take place from Bangkok's Sanam Luang through Ratchadamnoen Avenue and the Royal Plaza.

The UDD leader said that the mass rally in Bangkok, Red Shirts will block key army camps in Prachin Buri, Lop Buri and Kanchanaburi provinces.

The Red Shirts earlier rallied sporadically against the government for the month leading up to this Friday (February 26), the date which the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions will announce its ruling whether or not to seize the Bt76 billion(US$2.3 billion) in frozen assets of convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The Red Shirt leaders earlier announced that no mass rally will be held on the judgement day itself, but has gone to some lengths to explain and encourage Red Shirts as individuals to exercise their right to appear at the Supreme Court to show their support for the convicted ex-premier.

Meanwhile, the Red Siam faction of the Red Shirt movement, led by Surachai Saedan, announced Tuesday that it will erect a temporary stage at Sanam Luang from Thursday through Saturday, February 25-27, from 5pm to midnight each day.

Mr Surachai said his faction's gathering is not meant to oppose the court verdict on Mr Thaksin's frozen assets, but to inform the Red Shirt supporters about the legal procedure of the case and prevent them from rallying at the Supreme Court on the day of the verdict.

Following some news reports that an armed group planned to incite chaos in the capital during the Friday court verdict, National Security Council (NSC) secretary-general Tawin Pleansri dismissed the rumours, saying that no one can take the law into their own hands.

Mr Tawin said no matter the decision of the court is, there will be satisfaction and dissatisfaction among people of differing views, He urged the Thai public to look and think forward to get the country out of this crisis.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva reassured the Thai public that the government can handle the situation and that it is not necessary to invoke any special security law.

Mr Abhisit brushed aside Mr Thaksin's suggestion that he is willing to reconcile if the government grants him amnesty, saying he is willing to talk with the ousted premier on the condition that Mr thaksin respects the country's legal procedures.

"If Mr Thaksin respects the law, I can negotiate with him," said the premier."If he [Mr Thaksin] does not accept the legal process, I can't talk with him."

Mr Abhisit added that the government won't bow to any threat and is duty-bound in maintain law and order in the society. (TNA)

What about the yellow shirts who disrupt the thai economy and the tourist industry. I see from looking on the out side that the red shirts are mice and the yellow shirts are the tigers who are systematically destroying the thai economy. From an outsiders point of view I think thailand should get rid of these yellow shirt terrorists. BKK airport is still a sour taste in the worlds mouth.

Hmmmm a demand that Thaksin respect the law? How DARE you PM Abhisit?!

(Thaksin didn't respect the law when he was in power, and is a fugitive currently, so I guess to show that he actually does respect the law will require Thaksin to turn himself in to face his 2 year jail term!

1) this thread is about Jutaporn's newest claim that the reds will get 1000000 people on the streets of BKK (not about the yellows)

2) review the tourist numbers with the red's behavior last Songkran

Was it not the samaman who proclaimed that thousands of busses from Isan will drove to BKK.

Alot of blablabla thats all.

Apparently you have not read the othe English language paper from BKK, or ANY Thai language paper etc etc etc

I think we will ALL be happy if the red threats fizzle and die without there being any of the violence their leaders like sae Daeng have threatened!

Question --- would you have the Nation deny Jutaporn and the reds space in the paper?

BTW --- since TV and The Nation joined up, I no longer pay for a subscription to The Nation for my home or my office, just the Bangkok Post. I get all of The Nation I need to see right here on TV!
