I Am Buying A Second Hand Car In Thailand

Hi i am about to buy a 2nd hand car. What do i need to transfer it into may name ? Like copy of my passport and visa or what ? and also if i buy the car in one provance can i register it in another ? Also how much money does it cost to transfer the name over from the former Thai owner into may name ? any infomation would be great thanks

Passport, Visa and comfirmation of your address from your Embassy or Immagration. Driving licence if i am correct. This is done at the road transport office.

Same applies to registering it in a different province.

If i am wrong i am sure i will be corrected, but i think thats about all you need.

Cannot remember how much it costs but it is not too much.

The garage I bought the car from did it for me, passport, visa, work permit, no proof of address (actually i did give him a copy of the yellow book so maybe that was used), no driving licence copy and a few thousand baht. You also need to take the car so it can be inspected (although my car was not taken to the centre) but i believe some external garages can do the inspection for you.

I'd suggest you check this carefully. In 2002 I bought a car when I had a non-immigrant visa and a letter from my employer but didn't yet have a work permit (got one a bit later). I was told at the Govt road transport office that this was insufficient documentation to transfer the ownership and I've have to put the vehicle in my wife's name. Don't think this was something orchestrated by my wife, because she is still with me and hasn't really gained anything. So I suppose the issue is: do you need a work permit or something else I didn't have at that time? Or has the position changed?

I don't see why you would need a work permit. I thought the issue of the work permit was about financing a car in your name. I have bought 2 cars from dealers and only needed what i said in my reply, no work permit even mentioned not that i had one anyway. Then again maybe i am wrong.

do all the retired foriegners, living in thailand ,

and owning a car , have a work permit ??? ..i think not ..

He will only need to provide what i mentioned in my previous post. The work permit is needed if he wants to take finace on the care.
