Bringing In A Car Shell From Japan

Featured Replies

Hi, not sure if this has been covered before or not, but I couldn't find it, just something about kit cars.

Well i would like to bring in a car shell from Japan and use the parts that I brought with me from US on this shell, would this be possible or ?? and most of all what would I be taxed on and to what rate, not the 314% for over 3 liters I hope :)

Thanks MIcael

Do you intend to get this registered for road use ??

Do you intend to get this registered for road use ??

Yes I do, so I guess that is one of my other questions, is that possible, at least I should get papers on it showing that it has been registred in Japan.

Just guessing here

Import is importduty, car shell with VIN code probably 80% of customs estimated value.

Road use is excise tax, over 3000cc/220 hp is 50% on shell and parts customs estimated value, and on importduty.

ad 7% vat to it all

then start the process of roadsafety, emission, approval

Bye Bye Dream.

So why bye bye dream, a very good answer there

So it is all just about what initial value they will put on the car and after that still the 314% taxes.

Oh well i guess I'm better of calling Thai customs and ask how they will estimate the value and what taxes they will use, was just hoping someone would know.

How about road safety and all, anyone knows that process well or?? and the costs.

Maybe I should just bring the whole car from Japan

The main reason for grey importers to be able to sell at lower price than maindealers, is importing on low value and low engine spec/fake hp.

in 2009 importduty/excise tax on japan made cars over 3500cc/290hp was reduced, since they dont compete with thai made cars

Based on the number of posts "how do i import my treasured old car into Thailand", the taxation/confiscation replies they get and the number of that type of vehicle in the "what car do you drive "threads. So bye bye dream i think is appropriate caption but please prove me wrong.

Well there are always people like u in all forums, who seems to only be able to post crap in other threads in stead of helping, so if u don't have any good info to post stay out of my thread.

I guess you have a boring life and feel a need to chop down on other people, feel a bit sad for you, just one advise, get a life.

Your post had nothing to do with mindset, just a negative posting nothing else, just hate a**holes that have nothing to bring to a post, but still need to post. Could it be that other people just don't know the answer and instead of being a**holes they just don't post.

If you can find a post in the forum that talks about bring in a car shell from Japan, please feel free to point that one out to me or else shut up.

There was a thread a while ago about a guy successfully importing a Triumph TR6 shell from the UK.

Every import a car thread brings out all the armchair customs agents / freight forwarders who will post stupid negative comments, anyone who's been here long enough knows anything is possible if you have enough money and/or know the right people.

I have seen several cars that have been recently imported from the UK, I was speaking to the owner of this Jag last week (dodgy nak leng type), he was a bit elusive about the details but said it was difficult and he paid 300%, (of exactly what I'm not sure as it looks like the car has Isuzu number plates and had no tax disc) but it is possible. Whether it's actually worth it is an entirely different question and one only you can answer.

There is also a Ford Ka in Jomtien than used to be on UK plates, now it is Thai registered.

It would be good to have a real "Car Import Thread" on ThaiVisa, somebody actually going through the process and posting the details.

Regards

Thanks for the info :)

Well if I go through with it then I will post here for sure as I don't like to just hear it is impossible, well it has been done so it has to be possible. Will there be headaches, yes I'm sure it will, but so is it to bring a car to almost any country, so if you don't want any trouble, just buy a new car and be happy. But in my case it is a car I have been building up for some time, and just don't want to start all over and I don't think it would be easy to find a Nissan 350Z shell in Thailand or even a crashed one that I can build on again, don't want a new one as I will replace most of the parts anyway and that would just be waisting a lot of money and time.

Thanks Micael

Yes, and you think a Isuzu Plate and no tax register is legal? Why all other cars must have a tax registration? 300% import tax is correct, but 300 % of what??? Not from the marked value in UK, that's for sure. An the guy from the TR 6 paid about 180'k for a rusty buddy. That's cheap eh?

>>It would be good to have a real "Car Import Thread" on ThaiVisa, somebody actually going through the process and posting the details.

There was a thread here where the poster actually did bring in a high value car via his connections with a high ranking customs official, but no specifics were given except to say that he made a deal with the customs official over how much he had to pay before shipping the car in from overseas. I asked in the thread if he would/could send over his customs guy's contact details, but he declined to help anyone else out, for whatever reason.

Hi,

"And you think a Isuzu Plate and no tax register is legal?"

Yes I did think that. Actually I am quite stupid.

The only thing that made me think the plates were from Isuzu is the plate surround says Isuzu...........and the tax disc might have been removed while the film was fitted (that is what the car was doing in the garage).

"300% import tax is correct, but 300 % of what?"

As I said in my post "he paid 300%, of exactly what I'm not sure"

"That's cheap eh?"

Where did anyone say it would be cheap ? Possible, yes. Cheap, certainly not.

"An the guy from the TR 6 paid about 180'k for a rusty buddy"

I think you will find that was the amount declared for customs purposes, but total payments (bribes/fines/whatever) came to over 600K

Cheers

Yes, I think I remember that, a guy in Pattaya with a late model 5 series BMW from UK if I remember correctly, all became shrouded in secrecy and mystery.

Cheers
