I moved back to the U.K over one year ago. I have a thai girlfriend and son in Thailand. My son has a Thai birth certificate with my name on it but not an English translated birth certficate. He is only 1 year old.

I am applying to get them to come to the U.K on a Tourist visa.

Do i need to have his birth certificate translated into English first? Will this help?

I have been told it's easier sometimes especially that i have a Thai / English son to get them a visa for the U.K.

In the future we planned to get married and them to live in England, i still go to Thailand twice a year but for now we thought the best thing was to just get a 6 month visa for them to come to the U.K.

Would this be frowned upon by the Embassy?

I admit i haven't a clue about the best way to go about this paper wise.

I am desperate for them to come over and would welcome any help or advice on this situation.

many thanks in advance, it really would be appreciated.

You could always get your son a British passport and save him having to get a visa. You could also get him a UK birth certificate while you're at it.

I have to agree here. if your son shares two nationalities then you should register him with the embassy along with obtaining a UK passport for him. UK like the US wants to see a paper trail, and providing that paper trail makes the visa process less painful.

You should register the birth and apply for a UK passport for him i would get it translated for your records we translate documents etc the cost is 400 baht per document.

If you require help with your application feel free to contact me .

Thanks, do i register the birth here in England and try to get the U.K passport for him from here?

Thought i read somewhere before that the mother had to be here to witness it?

Any particular Births, deaths, or Marriages office?

Thanks for the response and yes, i will be in touch to translate the documents. The original certificate was provided by the hospital in Sisaket, would it need to go back to them to sign first for any reason or can the document go straight to you?

Do you need the original?

My partner is now in Sisaket and will return to BKK once all the relevant forms are done.

I don't know if she need a signature from the hospital first for the translation?

Thanks again for the response, this is all very new to me.

You/your wife will have to register your son's birth and apply for his UK passport at the British Embassy in Bangkok.

I know from a friend doing his daughters passport application in the Philippines that you have to send your passport details and proof that you were in Thailand at the relevant times, but I can't remember exactly what he had to send.

thanks for the response, this info is priceless.

It would appear then that this could be done pretty easily in BKK with the right documentation.

After registering the Birth there with the English Embassy i could then find it easier to get the passport there too.

Would i need to be in BKK for this though, i live in the U.K now.

I understand they may want to speak to me in an interview.

My partner is in Thailand but not me, could she alone be able to do this at the embassy with the right documentation?

thanks again for the info, much appreciated.

No interview needed. Take the application, plus your full birth certificate to the embassy. There's no need for an appointment, just turn up at the main gate and they'll let you in. You go upstairs, take a ticket and they'll check and photocopy your docs, take the fee (You can pay by credit/debit card) and send the passport and birth certificate to your wife's home address.
