Imac 27" I5 / I7

Looks like I will be picking up 1 or 2 of these.

If you take the price of say the DELL 27" LED monitor almost as good but slightly less pixel density and not IPS. (The only competition screen wise 2440x1440). It works out about $200 less expensive than the iMac 27". So pay $200 more than the Dell monitor you get a complete i series computer system!

How does apple do it for that price? Really must be the deal of the century computer wise. Even the asking price for say just the screen itself is still a good deal but attach a free computer its pretty impressive.

I don't think Dell Thailand sell monitors other than through corporate channels, and the ones they do sell are not the better ips panels. I searched for a long time to find a decent ips panel monitor and came up blank. Ended up with the Apple LCD display which is expensive but beautiful.

Agree with the OP, the 27" iMac is an amazing monitor with a virtually free computer inside!

i7 is available from Apple its a configurable option under the imac Quad Core. No retail location seems to stock it in BKK so need go direct to apple from their website.

I went for the 3.06ghz Core2Duo version to use as extended desktop on the i7 quad core. Dual 27" monitors really works well. Not cheap but works very nicely.

Education store at apple online gives a fair saving as well. Buy the Memory and HD upgrades from OWC macsales.com rather than apple. Almost half the price.

Sawasdee Khrup Khun Negreanu,

Congratulations on your new set of toys :)

A bit baffled about your original post : the most expensive Dell branded 27 inch monitor we can find is a bit over $1000 US: Dell brand fancy-schmancy 27" monitor

You seem to imply you could buy an iMac with IPS monitor and i series CPU for only two-hundred dollars over that, but what that 27 inch super-duper screen iMac with i series CPU costs on the Apple Thailand store is about 73K baht, well over US $2000. The core-duo it sounds like you bought, rather than the i series CPU, is still around US $2000.

Please enlighten us on what you meant in your original post, while we sit here feeling jealous of your new toys (actually we're not; we "betrayed" the "cult of Mac" years ago).

The Dell 27" IPS display (UltraSharp U2711) costs US$1099, or $600 less than the cheapest 27" iMac, or $100 less than a 21" iMac. Still, $600 is not a bad premium to pay for a 3.06Ghz processor with 4GB of RAM, a 1TB drive, firewire, a very good ATI Radeon graphics processor, and all the other bells and whistles. A similarly configured Dell Optiplex 3.0GHz Core 2 Duo would cost more than $1200.

Trouble is, you can't buy the Dell ips panel equipped monitors in Thailand; not through normal channels anyway.

Sawasdee Khrup, Khun Bubba,

The cheapest 27 inch iMac seen on the Apple Thailand store is 62,900 baht or about US $1965 at 32 baht to the $ (note the current political situation seems to be weakening the baht, so your US $ is worth more baht today than a week ago).

Now, it's possible that Khun Negreanu got an educational discount, so perhaps he did much better than that.

It seems to me you are implying you could buy the lower-end 27 inch iMac for US $1700. And, we're not "challenging" you: seems quite possible some shop in Pornthip Plaza might be selling for that price.

NEC makes a terrific 30 inch IPS monitor with advanced color correction and 10/12 bit LUTS for over US $2400; a programmer we know in the U.S. got a refurb one for around $1200, and is "in love" with it. NEC 30 High-End Monitor

Hopefully we'll see an eventual decline in the higher-quality monitor costs as production ramps up.

In any case we feel "mudita" (that's Pali for "sympathetic joy") in knowing Khun Negreanu has a wonderful set of toys.

We hope Khun Negreanu will do good things for himself or herself, and others, with his or her computer(s), and develop his or her mind to its fullest potential !

Was at Pantip 2 on Sunday, noticed the IMAC 21.5"/3.06/2X2GB/500GB/ was 37,400 baht. in the Apple Shop.... Feel sure that this spec was more like 50,000 at the same store 6 months ago. Nest to it was the IMAC 27"/3.06/2X2GB/1TB @ 58,300, again feel sure this was more like 70,000 6 months ago.

Sorry no idea what that is in US$

37,400 is an amazing price, considering that the price is 43,900 at the online Apple Store and Apple products are essentially fixed price at all retailers in Thailand. In fact, if you convert to USD at 32 THB/USD, that price ($1169) is even cheaper than the price in the US ($1199). Are you sure it wasn't a Chinese fake? :)

But seriously, perhaps it was second hand or a refurb? If it's a brand new iMac and you are looking to buy one, you best get over and buy one before they change the price! Just in case anyone might want one, what was the name of the shop?

When I go to Pantip 2, walk by and always look... Name of shop ? Apple, they only sell Apple, this Apple shop in on the 4th Floor... Yes it could have been these were display models.

Do I want one ? not sure, like the idea but not sure about all-in-one things.... eg: my 2 month old 1GB graphics card got a problem, I popped in an old card and took the new one back [2weeks later this card was replaced Free.. Reason I was at Pantip 2 on Sunday] if it was a All-in-one then that is it NO Computer untill repaired. I did look a year or so ago, but a Mac PC @ over 100k is out of my price, did ponder on the mini, but hate air con so not sure if everything inside would stay cool in a mini case.

Well if you did buy an iMac, it comes with a one year warranty, which can be extended another two years if you buy Apple Care. Apple is second to none when it comes to warranty support, repairs and replacement. For example, I bought a 21.5" iMac last month and it developed a problem with the display after two weeks of use. I phoned Apple customer service and they sent me a new one which arrived from Singapore in less than a week, and they paid the shipping to pick up and return my defective one.

If you have any computer under warranty, can't wait for a repair and set off replacing parts yourself until replacement parts arrive, I'd say your warranty would certainly be voided.

Only my very 1st PC was out of the box, since then always rebuild or built my own every 18 - 24 months for 20 odd years, so warranty is per item... so when the new 1GB 9800GT graphics card went funny, got my old 512mb 8600 GT out and popped it in... I then still had a pc
