Will Thaksin Be Saved?

Let's all pray Thaksin will be saved this time round. Saving Thaksin means saving Thailand from the elites who seized power

But who will save Thaksin from himself ? :)

Let's all pray that the RED revolution succeeds tomorrow then....for the good of all Thai people. It's time for a change

"RED revolution", but isn't it supposed to be a peaceful protest, or have the orders changed ? :D

We may be find out sooner than we thought if he is in Cambodia as reported.

But the "reds" on here would have us believe that this weekends attempt to paralyze BKK is NOT about Thaksin. ...

yeah right

The anti-Thaksin here in in the Bangkok Media are desperately trying to make Thaksin the boogey man. This is an attempt to prevent a real election, properly supervised by the world observers from being held.

According to your own words Thaksin is an observer from Dubai. All Thai citizens have a right to be heard.

What real election? Thaksin bought both of his elections with illegal bribes of election officials and voters as well as the world observers. Niether Thaksin or his cronies Somchai, Samak were elected by a "real election" either.

He bought his majority percentage by purchasing several larger parties

before the elections and calling them factions. Banharn, Sanoh, Chalerm, Newin et al.

If his TRT ran against ALL factional parties, it would have just been one more...

but for Thaksins money before hand.

Thaksin did several things that villagers in Issan really liked. He gave each village 1 or 2 million baht. They then lended that to whoever was in need. Interest was paid back to the village...but I am not sure if interest had to be paid back to the gov or Mr. T? Also, he setup a program where you could borrow 40k or 50k baht to buy a cow. You paid like 2k baht a year for interest.

Back then cows were very valuable (no so much today). So, some folks really did well with this. Others abused it and just bought a scooter...or drank it all. But the end result was they loved him for that.

He also did the 30 baht medical program (with all it's pros and cons). For many, this was a very big deal.

quote shortened.

I have access to people in the rural area, and I employee a few from Isan and south. What they desperately need is upgrade in their education system. You can teach a man/woman how to form a kettle out from a piece of aluminium block, then he/she can make a living after that. But when you just hand the 'government's' money (not Taksin's) to him/her, many will spent it all. Cows become fighting bulls. Money lost in cock fighting. Many ended up in debt. There's a reason why the rural people are poor, they have not learnt the skill to manage money, to earn and preserve their incomes.

This post sums it up. The support for him is all about the Baht. I can understand that. Seems like the Dems should have continued those policies (maybe they did I'm not sure) Once the smoke clears from all this I hope the Democrats learn that Isaan and the north should not be ignored.

Thaksin is a no more than a common criminal who is out to destroy his own country so he can get his money and power back. I doubt he cares anything for the people of Thailand.

Beautifully written. :) Many things evolve around the Baht. Someone enlightened before me in his blog about what we can learn from the movie "the pursuit of happiness". He wrote that lesson learned was that money can buy happiness. I couldn't counter but agree to the sarcasm because that's what the movie's all about. I agree with you about Taksin does not care about the people of Thailand, yet I think he will be in exile for a long time. This whole political debacle is going to backfire on him big time.

This shambles will surely unravel. But the desire for true democracy (such as these things ever exist in SE Asia - and I don't really see it in any ASEAN member country), will not die now, in the sense that there has to be a power shift. Whether it is by peaceful means over time, or swiftly through violence such as that being demanded this weekend, remains to be seen. But it will surely happen.

well written :D I've spent my youth and lived here for 20+ yrs. This is a home to me more than my own country. I have to say I am so lucky my parents did not choose to migrate to other ASEAN countries at the time. Democracy here even though is not fully developed, but at least Thais get to taste a real sense of democracy. I have Burmese, Cambodian friends who use all means to evade immigration officers. To be sent back to their country is like being send back to jail.

Greetings one and all,

Before ****** loaned all the poor people money they were simply poor but not in debt. Many people in my village are now in debt and are more poor than before plus have lost face because they had to beg and borrow to pay back the loan plus interest or they would lose their house. Much shame has occurred because of this misguided program.

Being generous to the public using nation's money. Some would say it is a legalized way of vote buying, and it happened in my home country before. Many economists said a temporary monetary assistance won't help these farmers in the long term. On the other hand it is better to provide 'affordable' modernized educational facilities so the younger generation will grow up equipped with knowledge to make a decent living. Also for a country with a population largely lived on the agricultural industry, it is important that the government provide incentives to stimulate farm equipment companies to provide rental services for the rural to increase farm product output per limited area. Obviously, the ex-premier did not think so.

question to you all :

in your home country, do you pay taxes when you sell shares?

shares and stock market ... you can lose all or win big

and for this... there is no tax owned to anyone ...

so why all the fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ?

I am not specially pro/contra toxin :D

but aren't they robbing him ?

it was his company / his shares or whatever ...

smells like communism ?

if there is/was tax due ... they should make him pay double (200% fine on owned tax) and give back the rest

no ?

think twice... if it was your company you (would have) sold ...

question to you sir. Are you asking because you are doing the same thing as Taksin had been doing and you are wondering if you are breaking the law? If so, I suggest you create shell companies in tax heavens, so you can move a hundred transactions around btw your accounts per hour without revenue department's noticing, you can sell your company to Temasek for one baht so you don't have to pay tax, transfer 100 million baht of of assets to your two maids without them knowing, just force them to sign the doc... oh, and have your son own billions of baht under his name before he is 20. And don't forget to charter a private airplane and transport all the baht and dollars out of the country before things got out of hand. In the meantime, buy your way into power and change the law to legalize your doings. Hack through all the opponents and obstacles with threats or real knifes, guns, there are always people for hire to do the job that deemed too low. Grab cash and throw it into Isan air. Say out loud that you own Thailand and you will make this country into a 'real' democratic country. Hint that you will take out the Monarchy and give the people their full power. Can you feel the sarcasm now :D

Truth is, in and outside of this forum, a lot of people trusted Taksin (I being one), trusted that he was not actually guilty, trusted that he managed the country well. However, Taksin is losing trust from all sides in a very fast pace :) . All his oversea shouting, association with Hun Sen, and this upcoming rally to 'save Thailand??" with him in absentia, which could turn Bangkok into a riot city, simply put more distances btw him and the people from the land of smile.

At this point of time, it is very clear that Bangkokians do not favor 1 million mass rally happen at their door step. It is a fight they do not with to get involved with. :D

Not from Dubai, from Siem Riep, where he is probably advising the Cambodian Govt. My wife tells me that Red shirts were at our local market yesterday, offering big bucks to locals to go to BKK with them. Werent getting a lot of interest shown apparently.

Stay safe

Don't go out in red,

Stay home in bed :D :D :)

The real distress for Thaksin is that the Thai economy is doing perfectly well coming out of the international financial crisis without him.

This factor is not lost on Thai business leaders who are unlikely to want to swap the current situation for the Thaksin circus.

Thaksin is surplus to requirements.

The economy is doing well, even though Thaksin and his red shirts have done everything within their power to sabotage the current Government and despite an otherwise "global economic crisis". If it works, don't fix it. Give the Democrats some time, and they will probably do a lot more for the poor, than the few crumbs, that Thaksin threw to them, when he was in power.

It's a good point that you make, The Democrats have done pretty well in giving Thailand some stability in some very difficult times - and that's not including the unfortunate disruptions caused by The Fugitive. The sad thing is, that Thaksin knows that if The Democrats can get through this global recession still in power, then he is going to have big problems getting his nose back in the tough here in Thailand. Thaksin is yesterdays man, he had the chance to do something after the 2001 election - but sadly took the easy root into aligning himself with old style politicians like Chalerm, Chavalit, Banharn and then lining his and their pockets further. He gave a little to the poor, but stole a lot more.

The only person that can save Thaksin, is Thaksin himself.

Worth repeating from the Last Chance thread.

Seems Thaksin is no better at reading the tea leaves than many, and as bad as most.

Certainly he was too busy trying to jigger the constitution with PPP in fall 2008

to even notice, the financial world imploding around him.

Certainly he did NOTHING to direct PPP to lessen the coming fall for the nation,

even as they STILL were the government at that time and that was their job to do.

It was left to Abhisit and Korn to salvage the mess PPP left, and they have done a surprisingly good job of it.

So really Thaksins last chance was with Somchai to save the kingdom from penury,

or even RECOGNIZE the fall of the international banking system was coming.

Korn was speaking of this in the papers and being soundly ignored.

We have Thaksin and Somchai's ineptitude for the majority of new debt

that Korn and Abhisit were force to take on, to cover the rapidly falling picture they inherited.

The national balance sheet could be a LOT worse now, but it could have been better yet

had Thaksin and Somchai been aware of the world around them and not just monomaniacaly

focused on charter rewrites

Last chance long past, he's just too egotistical to realize he is already dead in the water.

Not able to ever win the brass ring again, but he can still bring the merry go round to

a halt pending repairs. Nothing more.
