PM disagrees with multi-versions national anthem

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has expressed his disagreement with a proposed move to introduce multi-versions national anthem, asserting that each country should have only one version of its national anthem with single melody and intonation widely approved by its citizens.

"A country should have only a national anthem with single melody and intonation widely approved by its people. So, should Thailand", the prime minister told journalists here this morning.

Mr. Thaksin was asked by the journalsits to give his comments on the recent move by Thailand's entertainment giant, GMM Grammy, to introduce the proposed six-versions national anthem.

The Thai leader's opinion was shared by Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-Ngam, a wellknown Thai academic, and a large number of other Thais.

Mr. Wissanu said that the Ministry of Culture, which is responsible for the issue, had announced its clear stance that all the new six-versions national anthems, proposed by GMM Grammy should be reviewed by national artists on music.

All Thai citizens should also have their says on the issue before it is finalized, he noted.

"In my opinion, each country should have only a national anthem with single melody and intonation widely approved by its people", he stressed.

The Ministry of Defence has liaised with GMM Grammy to produce the country's new-version national anthem, aimed at promoting patriotism and unity among the Thai citizens despite their different races.
