Mexican Restaurant At The Nightmarket

Yesterday I got a craving for Mexican food, and I have (looooong time ago) eaten at one in the nightmarket, on the left side when you walk away from Petchkasem road. Think the name was Baja Tacos or something similar. But I couldn't find it yesterday, I walked up and down 3 times before giving up.

Does anyone know if it has closed or moved or whatever has happened?

Baja Tacos closed several months ago. The California Cantina (another partly Mexican place) is also closed at the moment but will open again in the next couple of weeks under a new name and in a new location off Soi 94 (with much lower pricing too according to the owner). At the moment, until the new "Cantina" opens, the only place I know of where you can get Mexican food is El Murphy's on Soi Selecam.

Ok cheers for the answer, at least it wasn't my pathfinding skills that was the problem :D

I will try look for El Murphy's next time I get a Mexican craving.

Soi Selecam is the next soi past the Hilton headed north on the opposite side of the street. It's mostly beer bars and massage places but near the Hilton end is El Murphy's, right across the street from Lolita's! :)

Is California Cantina the one opposite Sofitel? Where is the new location off Soi 94, what is it near to?

Yes, it used to be opposite the Sofitel and is a good place for a variety of foods including Mexican, steaks, ribs, and Thai food. The new location is one block off Soi 94 on a little side soi running north. It's the second soi before you get to the railroad track coming from Phetkasem road. It is due to re-open in that location in about a week. Sorry, I don't remember what the owner told me the new name would be but I will post it here when I find out. The Soi runs head on into the restaurant so you can look down the soi and see it from Soi 94 (about 200 meters) and he said he will be putting a sign on Soi 94 at the entrance to the soi leading to the restaurant.

The owner moved there because the lease was increasing too much in the current location and they already own the piece of land they are moving to. He said that since he will not have a lease that the menu pricing will be up to 50% less in a lot of cases and they will add more Thai food to cater more to a local (rather than a tourist) market. He is also adding a take-away deli and bakery to the restaurant in the new location.

Tescos and the shopping mall sell a sachet of taco mix about 40 baht, tacos 65 baht....cooked with minced beef/pork/chicken, onion and coriander, tastes authentic....dont add too much salt as enough already in the packet.

Thanks HHfarang and 1HH, will for sure check it out when we get back there this month.......I really liked the California Canteen.

So is it actually in Soi 90 and not Soi 94?

Yes, I think so, but a soi running from 94 dead ends directly into the restaurant so you can see the front of it from 94.

I phoned them as we had driven to location but only saw construction work. Said it will be a few weeks before opening. There is a half page advert for Terrace 90 in latest issue of Hotline.

Called in alone at the California Cantina for a bite not long after it opened about three years ago. Owner came over for a chat (I was the only customer). I was reasonably impressed with both his attitude and business plan. Never made a return visit because I've only been in HH with the extended Thai family (most of whom don't do foreign food) so opportunities to eat at specialist cuisine restaurants are few and far between. The new place looks ideal for everyone in our party on our upcoming fortnight toward the end of the wet season. Can't wait to get stuck into the cocktail menu whilst the in-laws laugh at me for drinking anything with champagne in it "Spy" and anything with Bayleys in it "Ovaltine" :) .

Terrace 90 is now open. Went there last night and had a lovely meal and the prices are very reasonable.

A group of us went to Terrace 90 last night for Cinco de Mayo and the place was packed. I think every table was full around 7:30 or 8:00 and the Mexican buffet for 199 baht (which also included some Italian food and American style pork ribs) was really good. They even had live music which was unexpected.

Well I have eaten twice now at the new Terrace 90 and that will be my last visit I'm afraid. I ordered the sirloin, and only when I queried them after the rest of our party was served and almost finished did they admit they forgot about me. The steak that finally arrived was very tough and at least 1/4 of it was solid fat.

We sat inside and although it seems nicely decorated, the acoustics are terrible, very noisy, like being in drum. Another small annoyance is the tables and chairs, 2 chairs just barely fit under the table, no room to move.

A real disappointment after my experiences with the original location.

I was there and queried the owner about this and she said that because of this and feedback from another customer she was changing the supplier of their sirloin to Villa Market to assure quality, but said the price would remain the same. I haven't had the sirloin but I have had the fillet and the rib-eye and they were both very good. (The rib-eye also has a lot of fat, but that is normal with this cut of beef so if you want tender and lean you might try the fillet next time).

I've been there a few times now and did notice the fact that it's hard to get close to the table as the chairs barely fit under without leaving room for one's legs, but I didn't notice the acoustical problem and was grateful for the air conditioning as I usually go at lunch time and there are only a four or five restaurants I know of in town that have an air con section and are open for lunch..

I get great use out of the Thai Visa forum but am not one to post replies until now.

When I saw this topic I wanted to see about Baja Tacos, which was answered in the first reply by HHFarang. Then HHfarang proceeded to promote California Cantinas owners new place. Hhfarang posted 7 of the 16 posts in this topic about Terrace90 which is off topic. Which makes me believe that Hhfarang is Dave the owner of cal cant and terrace 90. He writes it in the way that is to much info for a person who does not have an intrest in this place.

First ,I loved and miss Baja Tacos, it was only tacos and burittos but they tasted great and were a far price.

Second, I had eaten Mexican food in the California Cantina two times to be fair to the place and both times it wasnt even passable for mexican.

Third, Hhfarang had previous posts that were very negitive about Baja tacos that when I read them I thought this guy must be from another planet.

or the bottom line he just might not have a clue as to good food.

First, I am not Dave and second, Dave is not the owner of Terrace90. His Thai family owns it, his Thai wife designed and built the building (she is a degreed civil engineer), and I believe it is jointly owned by her and Dave's niece. If you look at the restaurant thread pinned at the beginning of this forum you will see that I "promote" any restaurant I think serves good food for the money in Hua Hin. I do like Mexican food and there are only two places to my knowledge in Hua Hin to get it so that's why I mentioned El Murphy's as well as Terrace90 at the beginning of this thread as the op was looking for Mexican food. I have only ever posted one negative comment about Baja Tacos and also positive ones. I liked the place, and was sorry to see it close.

And please notice that nearly every post I have made about Terrace90 has been in the form of an answer to a question or comment from another member.

I just browsed back through this forum and here is a partial list of restaurants I have "promoted".

Minifarm Kitchen

Sirin Hotel Restaurant

Kim's Kitchen

Tamarind Restaurant

Usa Mass

Cool Relax

Mr. Burger

Baja Tacos

California Cantina

Caruso

North Sea

Brasserie de Paris

The Original Fish and Chips Restaurant

Madam Nu

Sabai

The Garden

Jimmy's Bar

Dick's Office

Buffalo Tavern

Terrace 90

Maybe you think I own all of these (wish I did!). I guess I just like to eat and like to let other members know when I think a place has good food or value.... :)

I ate at Terrace 90 last night, thought it was excellent food, we (my girlfriend and I) both had Mexican dishes. I have never been further north than Argentina in the American continents so I cannot comment on whether it was "authentic" Mexican or not, but I thought it tasted excellent. My girlfriend has lived 4 years in Arizona so she had Mexican a million times and she gave it thumbs up as well. Only thing is the price, which by my standards was a bit steep, but for most older people with more money than me I don't see this as any problem at all, I just can't afford to go there to often.

I think the price issue is "par for the course" for Mexican food in Thailand.

Los Cabos in Bangkok, which in my opinion and after having eaten at many, many Mexican food places in Thailand is the best Mexican I've had here, is definitely expensive.

An appetizer, a couple Patron Silvers, a couple margaritas, a combo plate and I think I went through 1300thb............

I have eaten at the Terrace90 resturant a few times over the last couple of weeks.

1st time very dissapointed, had the daily special of sausage mash and gravy, when it came i had to send the sausages back as they just wernt cooked enough [looked as though they had just been waved over the frying pan]

When the meal was returned the sausages were very tasty, however was very dissapointed when tucking into the mash to find that it was instant mash and not very nice instant mash at that.

I'm always happy to give a place a 2nd chance though and have been back 2 more times to try the mexican food which i must say is excellent, good sized portions and very tasty indeed.

Just one thing about the staff in there though, i am well aware that staff in thailand have thier moments but these girls have got to be amongst the most miserable resturant staff i have come across.

Don't think i have seen any of them smile once and indeed when i asked for the main course menu [only the breakfast one was presented to me when i sat down] i got a look that could kill and was made to feel as though i was being difficult just by asking for it.

So in a nutshell highly reccommended for the mexican food, stay clear of the sausage mash and gravy and don't expect to be made to feel welcome by the staff.

I assume you were there in the evening? The lunch time staff are very friendly and good fun - always ready for a laugh and a joke. I have to agree with you about the evening staff though when it comes to friendliness - they are efficient and all seem to speak good english but......

I've found the night-time staff at Terrace 90 to be okay, and the Friday night buffet is fairly good value for money. However I've been in there for breakfast or lunch on several occasions and it felt like I was entering a morgue. The staff were not welcoming at all & appeared to be just waiting for their shift to be over. On one occasion after waiting quite a while for the bill, I went up to the counter to pay and the girl just pointed at the amount on the prinout. She couldn't be bothered to say how much it was!
