i will vouch for bsplayer also, after trying most of the others. works great with subtitles, and i really like the borderless viewing window and you can change video settings,(contrast, color, etc.) and you can save these settings.

Or you can get WMP to handle it by downloading a new range of codecs.

Find a free codec pack - biggest hassle is finding one without spyware... (i.e. download latest patches for adaware at the same time, and as soon as the codecs are installed, run it to clean things up...)

Just stick in Divx Xvid free codec into google - and you'll find loads. (DivX and Xvid are both mpeg 4 codecs).

good point Mike - you will have to install the codecs before any mp4 will work. If you install the official DivX player, the divX codecs are automatically installed adware/malware free.

http://www.divx.com/divx/ (3rd program down is the free player)

Xvid codecs can be found adware free at

http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/

Once codecs are installed, most media players should be able to handle DivX and Xvis (the most common mpeg4 formats), but you can't beat Bsplayer. WMP and PowerDVD will play the files, but never very well - you need a proper player.

I love the borderless window mode too. Also in video/pan-and -scan you can fatten up the letterbox movies.

for corrupted files, or ones that won't open at all use the robust VLC player. Poor interface, but never loses search and seek ability, and can play corrupted files. (lousy interface though - go to SETTINGS/EXTENDED GUI for colour and contrast controls)

VLC has all its own codecs combined with the program (though will not instal codecs for use with other players)
