Thailand Denies Inappropriate Use Of Sniffer Dogs

Thailand denies inappropriate use of sniffer dogs

SA KAEW: -- Thai officials yesterday rejected a newspaper claim that sniffer dogs had been used inappropriately to inspect the vagina of a Cambodian suspected of drug trafficking, accusing Cambodian drug gangs of starting the rumour after finding themselves unable to smuggle their products over the border.

The incident has served to fuel tension along the Thai-Cambodian border at a time when the border area is awash with rumours of checkpoints being closed.

First reported in the Cambodian newspaper 'Today Daily', widely available on both the Cambodian and Thai sides of the border, the story claimed that Thai military officers stationed at the Aranya Prathet checkpoint in Thailand's eastern Sa Kaew Province were using sniffer dogs to inspect the vaginas of Cambodian women passing through to the Rong Krue Market.

The report quoted a 30 year-old Cambodian woman who claimed that Thai soldiers had reached into her vagina and underwear, and had used sniffer dogs to inspect the vaginas and anuses of several Cambodian nationals, including children and old people.

But the reports were denied by the Aranya Prathet district chief, Mr. Phakrathorn Thienchai, who said that although drug smuggling was a major problem, the police and military were circumspect with their searches.

But he noted that drug traffickers were increasing attempting to smuggle narcotics into the country by hiding them in their vaginas and anuses, and that intimate inspections - sometimes by sniffer dogs - were necessary.

According to the district chief, only female soldiers are allowed to strip-search women suspects, and sniffer dogs are not used in cases where the suspects are followers of Islam.

He also claimed to have cleared the matter with both the Cambodian authorities and the Cambodian media, and expressed surprise that such stories were still being reported.

Col. Kritwit Phamornphol, commander of the special military task force responsible for the border area, went further in his denials, admitting that sniffer dogs were used, but claiming that the Cambodian media had got completely the wrong end of the stick.

Far from focusing only on suspects' private parts, sniffer dogs were used to conduct complete body searches, he said, and the officials conducting the searches tried to do so as gently and politely as possible.

He speculated that the reports might have been spread by a gang of Cambodian smugglers who were frustrated at being unable to take their narcotics across the border.

Bangkok Post version:

Bad press won't stop border body searches

SA KAEO: -- Body searches for illicit drugs will continue in a strict but polite manner, despite scathing criticism by a Cambodian newspaper, border officials at Aranya-prathet said yesterday.

The Today Daily in Poipet said the use of drug-sniffer dogs by Thai authorities was degrading to Cambodian women crossing the border because the animals were ordered to sniff their private parts.

Aranyaprathet district chief Pakaratorn Thienchai said body searches were necessary because a large quantity of illicit drugs were near the border waiting to be smuggled into Thailand and female smugglers usually hid drugs in their anus and vagina.

The searches did not target any particular gender or nationality, he said, and everyone crossing the border was checked.

Sniffer dogs were more convenient and more polite than physical searches, Mr Pakaratorn said. Sniffer dogs also checked men and children.

Muslim travellers were exempt, however, because using dogs would be religiously offensive to them.

No doubt we will see a marked increase in the number of Muslims crossing the border.

Ok,

I'm off to the Cambodian border to sell head covers, hahahahaha!

:o

Really not nice. Sometime, Thais don't realize that people from other nationalities (especialy Cambodian or more poor than themselves) are human too. In Siem Reap, I've been ashamed to hear Thai people speaking (in Thai) so badly about the local Cambodian staff. :o

Hello.........hello.............hello............What have we got here then ?

:o:D

LOL

:D

phew...

and on a more serious note... regarding the Muslim issue. As they report they are not only checking Cambodians, but everyone crossing the Poipet border... How do they know? If someone just claims to be one?

Also, why isn't considered "morally offensive" or "psychologically offensive" to everyone else, while it's ok not to check Muslims because it's "religiously offensive".

:D:D

There was a young lass from Poipet

Who said, "The dog's nose is all cold and wet"

The dog answered, "Woof,

You've got drugs up your chuff.

Welcome to Aranyapratet.

Very true.

For the Muslim men, there is an easyway to check, but quite morally or pshychologically offensive. :o

But a good thing in Thailand that they really try to respect all religions and consider all religion in an equal status. :D ..... Except that somtime some are more equal than others. :D

or from South, or from Africa or.... or...

It is just nationalism, lack of education, ignorance which bring racism. Unfortunately and sadly it is quite a worldwide phenomena.

I'll give this thread another two hours...

I'm sure there's a joke somewhere about "sniffer dogs" and "sniffer pussies", but can't quite put it together.
