Thais seek help to stop Malaysians escape fasting

SONGKHLA (Thailand): The Satun province religious council is seeking co-operation from the Malaysian religious authorities to act against Malaysian Muslims who cross the border to escape from fasting during Ramadan.

Council committee member Amin Mohd Ariff said they would discuss the problem with their Malaysian counterparts to curb the problem, which has become widespread in the province.

The co-operation could focus on the possibility of handing over Malaysian Muslims caught for not fasting to their respective state religious councils for action, he said.

“We should not take the problem lightly as it can get out of hand if left unchecked,” Amin said after breaking fast at the residence of Malaysian Consul-General Wan Ja’afar Wan Mahamud here on Friday.

According to Thai Islamic laws, action cannot be taken against Malaysian Muslims who do not fast in southern Thailand.
