Hi-speed Internet In Rural Parts Of Thailand (srisaket)

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm currently situated in Srisaket outside the "city" of KhuKhan. More precise in my girlfriends house, close to their farm. They currently does not have a phone-line, as most here not have, and I doubt the telecompanies would care about putting it up for them either.

My problem is that I'm currently using a very slow-speed internetconnection using AIS USB-dongle, and connecting to internet using EDGE/GPRS. This is a very slow line and since I use internet for all sorts of things, and I like to download both movies and read heavy online news-sites, I am looking for alternatives to this. At the moment I have no clue as to what is possible. I have heard about UBC/True, but do not know how it works, what the price is or what speed I can get from it.

Good if someone can give me some clues as to how I can get a better connection up here. I also would like to know the down- and uploading speeds that can be offered for whatever you come up with.

I have searched a bit around the ned, but again, since my line is so slow, its a big job to find anything useful.

Other than this I have a good site for others using Firefox their laptop connecting via EDGE. This substantially improved surfing speed, since Firefox by default is set up for hi-speed internet.

(This is a dual-page tutorial, so not forget to go to page two after page one is done)

Thanks in advance.

I had IP Star in a rural area for awhile, it's better than GPRS but can be slow during peak time.

CAT CDMA is available in some rural areas.

Other than that, you'll have to wait for 3G.

CAT CDMA will do what you want. I regularly get speeds of about 1.5Mb/s using it which is much faster than EDGE. Cost about 800Baht/Month unlimited plus initial purchase of hardware dongle

Search this forum for many threads that will give good advice and more information

I am in a village 30km outside of Sisaket and used TOT DSL for two years with a phone line. Until last year I changed to 2mb/2mb leased line from TOT and got rid of the phone line.

Hi Galvheim

If you are 100% sure of not being able to get a cable into your house, the feedback I get from many members/friends (some in Srisaket) on our local forum is

go CAT CDMA and dont bother with IPStar.

CAT CDMA may well be all it advertises however first check with your nearest CAT office if they actually have coverage in your area.

If they do, fine and dandy but you may not find it so easy after you buy your new CDMA mobile as the normal mobiles cannot be used with CDMA.

You may also need to keep your original mobile and contract / top up Sim card to use as your normal conversation phone.

I can not see what's the big deal about CAT CDMA, I will certainly not buy this, when the initial price is 20'000 THB. I just got a quotation from the CAT office here in Srisaket. How can so many of you reccommend this, when its such a laughable price?

i have cat cdma in a small village in petchabun, and it was only 6k baht at the start and then 800baht per month.
