A couple of specific questions please.

My gf works on a cruise ship and and after a brief interlude working as a manager of a shop in BKK she wants to visit me. I suppose she is "between jobs" but she is "technically" still on "shore leave" as it were - as she going to start another contract towards the end of they year (her agency still have her on the books and hold her passport with her US work Visa)

On VAF-1 5.1 - and 5.5, 5.6 although not working at the moment should she put employed, unemployed, self-employed?

Should she put her agency workplace or the name of the cruise line or both?

5.19 Cost to applicant for the stay?

9. What does she put in additional information?

I will be meeting all travel accomodaton, but how much money is reasonable fo an 8 week stay? 50k baht ? 100k?

Many thanks.

5.5,5.6 I'd put unemployed, then expand on this in your sponsors letter. Include documentary evidence that she has a new contract starting whenever.

5.19 When my sister-in-law visited us, we met all the costs of her trip and she stayed with us. We put £20 per week for spending money and again expanded upon this in our sponsor's letter.

9 Any other information she/you feel may aid the ECO in making the correct decision; such as the expansion to answers mentioned above. I suggest you put "See sponsor's letter" and put any additional information in that.

Unemployed?

Would it be stretching to say employed?

You usually works six months on then 2 to 3 months off and has done for the last 3 or 4 years.

In your first post you said the GF will be returning to sea towards the end of the year. Thats more like 7 to 8 months not the 2 to 3 referred to above. Which is it? :)

She will be going back to work in a couple of months...Which as it's more than half-way through the year is technically "towards the end of the year" :D

Sorry for the confusion. :)

Is she still under contract; or has one contract finished and she is expecting to get a new one?

If the first, then put employed and provide a copy of her contract; if the second then unemployed.

Either way, explain the situation as I said before.

Final couple of questions.

I know you need a few documents "certified" - my passport and the deeds of my flat.

Is it worth a letter from the solicitor saying he knows me? (A mate is a partner in a Large London Commercial Law firm)

Does he have to certify every page in my passport (just a signature?) or only one's with stamps?

Finally, what is best way to courier my "folder" to Bangkok. A medium sized box from DHL is £49.95 delivered in 5 days. Or Royal Mail Global Express signed for?

Wow,sending your deeds to your flat to thailand :) ,get yourself a copy of the land registry papers to your property of the net,6 quid i think and certify them yourself.

Passport, copy every page, even the blank ones and sign and date them yourself,no problem

Letter from your mate not needed,

Royal mail are very good at getting documents delivered overseas.

Only copies of the deeds. You can't do anything with them, the originals are held by the mortgage company until's the mortgage is paid off! :D:)

Can you "certify" your own documents? :D

Yep can certify yourself ,no problem, done it with three visit visas and settlement visa for my wife.

good luck with the application :D

Its funny....I was always under the impression that to get something certified , it had to be done by a specially qualified lawyer who had a licence to do so , and they have a special government stamp to stamp each copy with. That is why it costs so much to have done.

You certainly cant do it yourself. Now if you mean " sign each copy " then ok.

However if it is for the immigration dept then I would think everything would need certifying properly.

As Yeesipha says, self certification is acceptable. I, too, have done this for visa applications.

One simply writes "I certify that this is a true copy of......" then sign and date it.

It wasn't for immigration purposes, but not long ago I did need to have a solicitor certify some copy documents. They simply applied a stamp saying the above with their name and office address as well and then signed it. Cost £10 per page, although another solicitor up the road wanted £20!

Every page of my passport or just the ones with my name/photo?

Certainly every page with an entry/exit stamp or visa on it. I think it's a good idea to include the blank pages as well, to show that they are blank, but that's not strictly necessary.

i went to the british embassy in bangkok yo have my passport certified and they told me it wasn't necessary - i.e. i could certify it myself.
