US banks refuse Trump's business
That is an unfair conclusion because it does not take into account litigation. The financial underwriters of entities who are being pursued for liability are often named in the litigation. The concept of joint and several liability gives rise to their legal exposure. It is not just firearms. Other industries face similar issues. Financial institutions are seen as deep pockets and get thrown into litigation because it helps squeeze money out of defendants when there is a settlement. Even when the banks defend and secure a dismissal, the legal costs can be very expensive, far more than the profit gained from the lending transaction. Also, most financial institutions have an internal lending guideline to exclude lending to convicted felons or entities tied to illegal activity. It is called moral hazard. If the policy is not applied consistently, a felon denied a loan can claim discrimination. This has been a standard practice ever since some banks were found to be laundering drug cartel funds and funding entities hostile to their regulating nation. Trump's multiple bankruptcies made him a poor credit risk, but this was addressed by tougher lending criteria. Unfortunately, as the bankruptcies and litigation grew, the Trump businesses no longer met client retention criteria. It is no different than when Bill Cosby was sued for allegations of sexual wrongdoing. He made claims under his personal home insurance liability coverage. It was to be expected that the insurer would not renew the coverage.
