Hi all,

I have allready been in talk with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Department in Thailand on two occations regarding what papers I need to bring forth in order to extend my current one-year driver licences for car and motorcycle to 5 years. One said that I would need two sets of: copy of visa, copy of passport, medical certificate and some papers from immigration. But another just said they wanted the same but did not mention any papers from immigration.

I know my passport will need to be a non-immigrant visa and that I have (non-immigrant "O"). I also remember last year when I made my certificates, for the second time, I needed to have a paper from the immigration. I think it was a Resident Certificate.

If I need a Resident Certificate, and I live in my girlfriends home, what documentation do immigration need about my wherabouts? I just remember in Pattaya this year when my friend wanted to open a bank account, he needed a resident certificate and when going to immigration they would only accept a businesscard from the hotel where we stayed. The only proble was that we where the first cutomers in that hotel and that they had not yet printet any businesscards yet. Anyway I just want to make sure about this, since we will driving pretty far tomorrow to get these papers, and want to make sure we bring all the necessary documentation with us.

Kind regards for any replies to this.

First I suggest you use this link to the Pattaya City Expats Club info pages regarding what is needed for each type of license.

PCEC

As for the Residence certificate from IM. If you live in a house with wife/girlfriend/significant other, you will need a signed copy of their ID card, a signed copy of the house book (Blue Book) inner page and I would suggest even a short written document from her/him saying you are a resident at that address. Its been sometime since I needed the residence certificate so Im not 100% sure of this requirement. I'm sure someone will jump in here and correct any mistake I made here.
