HELP!!! I'm going mad on the phone at the moment trying to source information.

I am a UK resident currently working and living in Qatar on a long term contract. I married my Thai wife over three years ago in Thailand (not reistered in the UK) when my wife moved to Qatar I also agreed to take responsibility of her daughter (aged seven) we arranged the necessary paperwork for her to travel with her mother to study and live in the UK/Qatar. Her Thai father agreed and signed.

The last three years we have lived as a family in Qatar, she attends a private English school in Doha and attends Thai school at the Thai embassy on a weekend.

I would now like to adopt the little girl and become her father (she calls me this already) she is always asking the question why her surname is not the same her baby brothers.

Can anyone tell me the first step I need to make to start the ball moving. I've spoke to the British embasy in Qatar and they did not really help. I've just spoke to the wife who has been informaed that we need to travel to Thailand to collect the necessary forms to be completed, they said that I must attend before they will handover the forms. Are there any forms I can take with me when I travel out there to save time etc........

I think this is going to be a long drawn out affair with lots of travel.....

Any assistance/advice/help will be appreciated.

There are 2 possible adoption, an adoption according to Thai law only and an international adoption. A Thai adotion will only be according to Thai law, while an international adoption will have to be according to both Thai and the law of your own country. Only an intrnational adoption will be recognized by your own country and counts to getting the child your nationality etc.

An international adoption starts in your own country, through a competent agency or government institution and a home study etc will be made to see if you are suiteble.

For the adoption you will need the aproval of the childs father. Findng out his feelings about this will be one of the first steps. It is posible that a Thai court overrrules any objections he might have. But in an international adoption you also have to check what your own adoption laws say about this.

Edit:

Thanks Mario her father does not have a problem with me adopting her.

Would this be still applicable as her mother lives with me and has done for the last three years?

UK adoption laws I will need to look-up as I'm living and working in Qatar.

I don't know about living in Qatar but your stepdaughter can use your surname in the UK without any formal name change documentation. My wife tells me you could also have her surname changed to yours if you go back to Thailand.

sumrit funnily I've just spoke about changing her name in Thailand first and then going through the adoption process. The wife's response is that this will make more paperwork and more hassles?? It's never easy trying to explain things to her once she has spoken to someone who apparently knows best (i.e. the adoption agency)

I will work on the idea of changing her name before the adoption.

Thanks

He is not the biological father, nor the legal one.

A name change can probably not be done in Thailand, as the name must have a meaning in Thai.

It would still be an adoption, but should make things easier.

Try to google for a UK based forum about adoption.

I have the same thing as OP, I need to adopt my wife's daughter. As we live in Thailand and we have no intention go to my farangland, is there any way to get the adoption approved by my country while doing the adoption here?

Thailand is part of the Hague adoption convention as my country, does it make any difference?

For the adoption you will need the approval of the childs father.

What if he's disappeared many moons ago?

The law provides for that situation and for the situation the father doesn't give permission. It makes it a bit longer process, but not impossible.

The adoption would need to done according to the law of both Thailand and your own country to be recognized by both countries, including the possibility for a visa or even to get your nationality.

You would need a home study, but suppose that could be done here. Maybe your embassy can provide more information about the adoption process in that case.

It seems that countries legislation is different on this kind of adoption case. I did spend some time with google and find out that it should be ok to adopt while living here. As my country keeps me as permanent resident of Thailand, I can do the adoption here within the Thai laws. Afterwards get the court approval from my country that the adoption is legal. When it's done my daughter is also able to get nationality of my home country.
