Thailand tense after fresh violence

by Anusak Konglang

BANGKOK (AFP) -- Thailand was tense Friday after clashes between "Red Shirt" anti-government protestors and troops left one dead and eight wounded, including a renegade general allied with the demonstrators.

The fresh violence in the capital Bangkok late Thursday came after Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva shelved a plan to hold early elections in November and hopes faded for a resolution to the crippling political crisis.

Renegade Major-General Khattiya Sawasdipol, a key figure in the protest movement, was shot in the head and seriously wounded while he was giving an interview to a newspaper journalist close to the protesters' sprawling camp.

Another demonstrator died in clashes with security forces.

Defiant Red Shirts vowed no surrender, despite the shooting of the fiery general, known by his nickname Seh Daeng.

"If you think the shooting of Seh Daeng will scare leaders and make them not dare to take the stage, you are wrong," one of the protest leaders, Jatuporn Prompan, said at the rally site in central Bangkok.

"No matters what the weapons are, it means nothing to people who are calling for democracy like us. We will not leave here as losers."

The Reds say the government is undemocratic because it came to power in a 2008 parliamentary vote after a court ruling ousted elected allies of their hero, former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, who was unseated in a 2006 coup.

Abhisit said he had ditched a plan to hold elections in mid-November under a peace plan aimed at ending the tense standoff because the protesters were refusing to disperse from their vast camp in the heart of Bangkok.

The mostly poor and working class Reds, who launched their campaign in mid-March for immediate elections, initially agreed to enter the process but efforts to reach a deal that would see them go home eventually broke down.

Bracing for further possible unrest, the government extended a state of emergency already in place for the capital and surrounding areas to 15 more provinces.

The United States said it was "very concerned" about the violence, and closed its embassy because it is close to the protest site.

"The government has to continue to have a dialogue with the demonstrators and they need to reach an agreement on a path forward," State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters.

Asked if there was a threat to democracy, he said: "There are fundamental fissures within Thai society and the only way to resolve this and to develop a civil and inclusive society is through peaceful negotiation."

Thirty people have been killed and 1,000 injured in Bangkok in a series of confrontations and attacks since the protests began in mid-March. It has been Thailand's worst political violence in almost two decades.

Hours before the general was shot the army had warned it would deploy snipers in the area around the Reds rally site as part of a lockdown aimed at preventing more protesters entering.

An army spokesman had said troops would surround the rally site with armoured vehicles and that demonstrators would be allowed to leave but not enter the area.

An unsuccessful attempt by troops on April 10 to clear a different area in the capital's historic district sparked fierce street fighting that left 25 people dead and hundreds wounded.

I am not all that sure that the Government has taken the right course of action. They run the risk of turning the red shirts into martyrs I believe that to be the only remaining hope the red shirts have of coming out of this situation with what they choose to call a victory.

That said now that the government has taken this course of action I would hope they have the courage to see it through. They to need some thing decisive to come out of this with out looking like a bunch of clowns if they don't already.

And who is responsible for the worst political situation? The government? No way, it is Thaksin and his paid slaves all by them selves. In any other Country in the world that would have been finished a long time ago, but the Prime Minister who has my full respect and that of all my friends how he has dealed with the situation. If it gets nasty now TRT = Thaksins Red Terrorists have to blame themselves for it.

Working class People? I did not see many of them there, all what could be seen the same drunken stupid bastards you will find everywhere spending the little money they have for moonshine boost.

Talk with the working class people and you will know what they think about the TRT Garbage.

Yes things have to change and they will change, just remember or if you can not look at it who has brought Thailand out of the 1997 crisis? It was the Democrats und Chuan Leekpai. And not as many claim Thaksin, all he did put the money the democratic government of that time has saved in to his and his croonies pockets.

Thaksin gives a dam about the poor all he did put money in their pocket so they would vote for him.

The PM really had no choice. The reds got stubborn, refused to honor their word and squandered all of their gains. They handed the government a licence to kill.

It is a sad situation, but they have no one to blame but the hardcore members. One has already paid for his sins.

only thing i question is why they waited so long to shoot him and pray they dont make a martyr out of him. The military should have taking him in months ago.

The reds , (i hope) realize it is their best interest to deal and end this before it escalates further.

Interesting how Seh Dang was being interviewed by International Herald Tribune when he was shot. If I'm not mistaken, this is the paper that had ties with Sondhi Limthongkul as distributor of his ThaiDay. A set-up with the cooperation of the yellow shirt leader? What a message to send to his nemesis, Thaksin.

Seh Dang? 'Say' no more.

I'm not so sure if it actually was an army sniper that took him out. If it was, well done.

Army snipers are trained to aim at the chest. It's a larger target and a high velocity .308 round if hit in the chest is almost always deadly due to shock and other factors. Also, the head is more likely to be moved quickly causing the shot to miss. Those rounds are steel core and will penetrate a normal "bullet proof" vest without a problem. Only a vest with added ceramic plates would stop it.

In my opinion, looking at the way Thaksin and his red terrorists have acted so far, I would not be too surprised if the shot was aimed at the journalist but missed. The renegade General probably came up with the plan and literally "shot himself in the head". Another journalist shot, with him as a direct witness saying - "of course it was the government - would I put myself in danger ?" would have been a nightmare PR disaster for the government. This in itself is another argument against the government having been behind this "execution". The danger of hitting the journalist would have been way too great as Sae Deng found out in person, only in reverse.

Once the machines are turned off and an autopsy is done with forensic examinations of the angle of the wound etc.. we will know more, but my bet is on a scheme by the reds gone wrong

But you don't know if the sniper would had a clear shot to the chest. He might had a vest with added ceramic plates. It might been someone else, a paid sniper from a business that looses a lot money due to the protests.

Would be interesting from how far away.

Wasn't he shot twice? I would look into who set up the interviews to take place in that specific area because I question if these shots were from a .308 or any other high powered rifle. Looking at the pictures of him after the shooting, he head seemed very well intact and the exit would was not even noticeable. Although I had hoped the gov't would take credit for the shooting, they have not and based on their actions to date ... I have to believe them. This was a guy who was disliked by both sides and though it was a bit of a roller coaster on the red side, he really did fall out of grace recently and was commenting on taking over the red mob. Could of also been his black shirts moving against him if they already got paid and realized further fighting would almost surely end with their death or incarceration.

But again, if this exact spot was not common for interviews, the answer will be looking into who set up the interview in this spot.

Actually, you have no idea. Refrain from posting guessing as fact. The last thing we need here is another argument based upon misinformation.

do you really beleive he would set up somebody so close to him to be shot, i doubt they are up to seeing angle of the shot in forensic examination. why would the Reds want to kill a foreign journalist on camera. it has to have been a sniper shot aimed for a head kill. i hope like any human being the machines are left on and he lives and makes a full recovery. the PM named him last week as one of the main problems then he gets killed the night the crackdown starts. i cannot remember but was the forum so anti yellow shirt when they caused all the misery for families at the airport. reds are not targeting farangs, the yellows did.

I don't buy this reasoning either but as for "do you really believe he would set up somebody so close to him to be shot" ... yes, 100%. The guy was loony and craved this kind of stuff to talk about and make himself appear as a warrior.

My two bahts worth...Seh Daeng lived by the sword and may very well die by the sword. He who begets violence always, inevitably receives it back in return. This whacko nut case had it coming to him and I wouldn't at all be surprised if it turned out to be a moderate red shirt who had SD assassinated as he had gone way off the reservation.

There are certainly moderate types who want this to end peaceably and people like SD and other hotheaded 'leaders' are greatly lowering the prospects for a peaceful resolution. At his very core SD is a paid thug of the former PM. SD arose in the movement because he is a zealot and happens to wear the rank insignia of a former RTA general--greatly respected in Thai culture...he's nothing more. He has been paid to make sure the protests did not end without a free return ticket for the boss...as well as motivated to inject serious violence into the fray by employing the Ronin shooters to make absolutely sure this would not end as a simple protest, continuing to strand the grand paymaster in exile. Perhaps there were promises made of a lofty government position if the protest succeeds in returning the old regime to power. Democratic values never were a real UDD goal; it is all about power and money and they don't give a hoot for their impoverished fellow citizens...who unwittingly are being as lackeys and to hide behind to prevent the security forces from sweeping over their miserable encampment. As much as I cannot respect the current government's inability to secure Bangkok, I do admire the PM's resolve and restraint. A genuinely moral and kind man, he has been badly hamstrung by a lame duck army senior leadership, a politically divided and hapless national police force and poor choices in key cabinet positions.

As I said once before, Thailand needs its own Lochinvar now to ride in on his white steed and move the nation into a colorless society and heal the grievous wounds that have rent this country into two. Could this be Abhisit under a new and fairly-elected government? Negotiation has to be the instrument that brings about this change and the Reds must stand down to allow normality to be restored. Continuing on this same path of zealotry will only reduce Thailand to anarchy and civil war, and I cannot believe those outcomes are goals sought by the UDD and their hallowed benefactor.

I simply can't believe that some poster here are advocating killing someone as just. Even if the argument is that the government had no other choices. There is always other choice. They are currently surrounding the rally site. Let's see where this take them.

i don't know who did the shooting or ordered it, but i do hope it is not the government. it would bode well for a country that just into the UN Human right council!!!!

I am not red, yellow black or whatever color you want to use, i'm just against senseless violence like that, whoever is the target

Panithan: CRES in control of areas around Rajprasong now

Deputy PM's Secretary-General Panithan Wattanayakorn said Friday that the Centre for Resolution of Emergency Situation is now in control of the situation of the areas around the Rajprasong rally zone.

Panithan, acting government spokesman, said security checkpoints of police and troops managed to block people from entering the protest zone.

"So, the situation is now stable and the authorities are in control," Panithan said.

Seems to me that things will go back to normal, hereby I mean, army retreats with heads down in shame lol, reds continue to create chaos in Thailand's capital.

Gotta respect a well trained army :)

Police arrests Seh Daeng!! Great, brave men to arrest a person who is on his death bed!

Disagree woth you because Thaksin is already dead. I have photo proof of Thaksin funeral (includeing an image of his ghost) taken from ThaiVisa.

Maybe his ex-wife give the order as his last wish? Quite possible.
