Amphetamines haul found in corn field

CHIANG MAI: -- Soldiers in Thailand's northern province of Chiang Mai today seized 30,000 methamphetamine tablets found buried under the soil in a corn field farmed by members of the Muser hill tribe.

The drugs were seized during a pre-dawn raid in the Chai Prakarn district village of Mae Fang Luang, carried out by a team of over 20 troops.

One small-scale drug trader was also arrested.

Col. Prakarn Cholayut, head of the local military division, attributed the burial of the drugs to recent government crackdowns on the methamphetamines trade, saying that traffickers were increasing hiding their drugs and sending them on to agents in small lots of 100-200 tablets.

According to the local district chief, drugs are still a major problem in Chai Prakarn district, particularly among young people.

The problem has become so severe that schools in the district now conduct compulsory drug tests on their pupils at the start of each term.
