Thailand's PM says order restored after crackdown

BANGKOK (AFP) -- Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Friday that order has been restored in Bangkok and the nation's provinces, after an offensive to shut down anti-government protests.

"We have restored order in the capital of Bangkok and the provinces of Thailand," Abhisit said in a nationally televised address, but said there was much work to be done to bring about reconciliation.

"We will continue to swiftly restore normalcy and we recognise that as we move ahead there are huge challenges ahead of us, particularly the challenge of overcoming the divisions that have occurred in this country," he said.

BANGKOK: -- In his latest televised address, both in Thai and English, prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva affirmed the restoration of order, urging for reunification despite differences of opinions and reiterating the prioritisation of the value of lives. Those responsible for arson, violence and other crimes will be prosecuted strictly according to the rule of law, but also with fairness and transparency. He mentioned that the previously rejected 5 point reconciliation plan proposed by the government will be employed.

"We belong to the same house" he said.

The prime minister pointed out immediate solutions, with ad-hoc Rapid Response Force set up to assist those affected. He said the rehabilitation of damages are as important as restoring morale of the people.

As for longer-term solutions, Abhisit listed the revocation of rights-ridden government decrees, fair and transparent prosecutions, as well as reunification of the country.

"This goverment has every intention to move this country forward."

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva went on TV live Friday afternoon, saying the government and the Centre for Resolution of Emergency Situation has restored order in Bangkok and provinces.

He said the CRES has put all efforts to work since May 19 and the situation has now improved.

He said the government is terribly sorry for all the losses and feels grateful for the public understanding and cooperation.

The prime minister said it is now time for the government to rebuild the country and go ahead with five-point reconciliation plan, with participation of all groups of people.

"This government has every intention to move this country forward," the prime minister said.

Interesting he used the phrase "We belong to the same house", reflects Khun Pongpat's speech at the awards the other day. Just for once a good piece of positioning advice. Not sure terrorism charges against K. Thaksin are wise, since many countries are loath to extradite for a capital case, might be better to go for a lesser charge [penalty] of conspiracy.

Why doesn't that surprise me? Being a member of PAD I should imagine you are quite cut off from the rest of the world.

Every decent Thai I know thinks he is the leader of the most evil government Thailand has known for decades.

Don't think the rest of the world doesn't know what went on in Thailand in the last few days. All the manipulation of the Thai press and the take over of Thai Visa Forums will not suppress the truth indefinitely.

The people of Thailand will learn the truth over time.

However, I too hope for reconciliation and unity, but that won't come through people like you.

The poor people in the north whatever color might be need better representation and they need regular town meetings where their concerns and problems can be addressed.

Right now the representation has the "what's in it for me" attitude, do their jobs ineffectually as they really don't care. Paid official is a good position.

Give these people effective voice, give them answers to their problems and they stop following the meglomaniacs that promise them the world while robbing them.

The Reds have no one to blame but themselves for what happened. The government offered compromise. the Reds refused. At that point the Reds lost face and there was no way they would regain it short of destorying the Kingdom. They are piss poor losers and like a pouting child who takes his toys and goes home, The Reds burned down or ransacked everything in their paths on the way out of town. resignation of Abhisit and Suthep will do nothing to pacify the Reds...if nothing else it would give them more reason to continue to rape and pillage the country.

Personally, I believe Thailand has a long road back form this one and Thaksin should have the remiander of his assets seized to pay for the damages.

But hopefully the next "revolution" will be a real one and not the greed of an exiled billionare disguised as a revolution for the working poor. Like you've said... he used them. And it's really too bad. Because, as misguided as they are at the moment, they DO deserve a change and better opportunities. But this was obviously a very bad way to go about it.

I love to try the drugs that Abhisit is on. It must be great stuff. The only thing Abhisit is capable of is reading prepared statements made by his boss Suthep. During the crisis we have not sen him one time on TV answering reporters questions. Too difficult, too dangerous. He and Suthep are Ernie and Bert of Sesame street.

The guy is a darn liar, which sais "we don't use live ammunition" and then a dozen people die. He comes from a party that serves the interest of the small Bangkok elite as they call themselves which never cared about the rest of the 95% of the population. Also his party must be dissolved because of the 236m Baht they took from some petrochemical company. The reds were the best that could ever happen to the man & party. If this drama did not happen he would not be ruling Thailand anymore.

The two faction paradigm, left vs. right, yellow vs. red is the small man's smokescreen and all he knows. But that he dies for his beloved leader, either Mr. T (the biggest thief) or Mr. A (the biggest liar), is sad; and the reactions of those two show how much they disregard human life and are ignorant about the demands of the public.

Wow, somebody can make business as usual now, but the blood that has been spilled will ask for revenge. Now they have terrorists, real terrorists, they groomed themselves some... Applause!
