Anyone with information on where one would go to "sell second hand items," regardless of their pedigree, please PM me.

I am trying to recover items stolen from my house and since local law enforcement is significantly more interested in watching TV and playing video games during work hours than taking an interest in my case, I must do the detective work myself.

If a person were wishing to pawn a computer or a camera or a phone or related items, where on the island might one go?

This thread is not to be misconstrued as encouraging illegal activites such as fencing stolen goods; rather, it is an attempt to locate stolen goods and, if humanly possible, bring the burglars to some form of justice.

Thanks,

I wish you the best of luck. I've lost over 1.2MB to burglars and a thief in the last few years. I even had the name of the thief, but no evidence. Meeting with the police was a waste of time. I put up ads for the missing items, not indicating that they were stolen, but that I was looking to buy. You might try putting ads at Tesco and Big C. I've heard that computer laptops are easily sold to computer shops on the island, even that employees go out at night to replenish their inventories. If you have the serial number of the laptop, you should visit the computer repair shops in your area. I know how you feel -- you have a lot of company on Samui.

i have been there. nothing turned up even though the police did try to help me. either the burglers are very proffessional or there is anyone insentive as to why stolen goods do not get returned if u want to know why ask a lawyer for free legal advise.

Since its in the Samui forum presumably Samui, but I imagine he could be on Koh Phangan or Tao.

I don't know of any "second hand" shops on Koh Phangan per se. Some of the computer repair shops might have them, same with phone shops that sell second hand phones (if a phone was stolen, that is)

Before he has gone home??? :D

They could at least have the decency to wait til he had got on the plane! :) (Unless they needed the receipt.)

Considere yourself a lucky man, here upcountry the BiB, instead to be playing games or watching tv as you say, they take an active interest in the cases, but from a different point of view, let's say you caught a lovely neighbour red-hand in your property, find some of the stolen items in his property and those of few other people living around him, get a few life treath because you finded out what was going on, with him holding a machete on his hands, many BiBs comes, the petty thiefs have no problems whatsoever to say that all those extra items in their property actually comes from your property and then all the BiBs do is take the farang's ID and check if ALL his documents are ok, no details are taken or asked to the criminals, you ask them what you should do if you find somebody in your property in the middle of the night holding a weapon in his hands and doing no goods, they do not give you any answers but just smile at you....great Thailand !

I occasionally get dodgy looking Thais coming into my bar trying to sell all sorts of things. Cameras (including video cameras), phones and laptops. presumably all stolen. I always tell them to <deleted> off...... :)

For smaller items try cell phone stalls at Tesco's, there are also a couple of "second hand mobile" shops on the main road just about 200m from Tesco Chaweng (driving to Lamai).

Personally, we failed to recover a cell phone and two cameras. Good luck with your stuff Tracer Round.

they are more likly to be sold on the streets between bars and stuff. Apperntly lady boys are well know pick pockets they go full moon and stick there hands down sleepy drunk forangs and come back with camera and stuff. give them to bar girls to sell on.

As for recovery of your items. you are probably better off get on with the local Pui Yai's there are more helpfull. they protect the local people in there village. If a burglery has happened in your village then it effects them too because them and there voter have to live there too. they hate theives.

some theives dress like builders so if people walk past in the night. people just reckon they are work men. some times they are work men. i mean where to they get there uniforms from.

i caught some on my cctv in my old house dress as builders. Infact they were. labours fromm Burmer and Surin.

Then u have the proffessional type of theive. pro's normally have your stuff in and out of the island and maybe stripped and out the country in minutes

then u have the drugged up theives that don't ccare just need another fix. even these types of people normally put your house un surviellencce for weeks maybe months. then when the time is right they strike.

always worth checking your surroundings. if u see the same people. specailly if those same people keep ccchanging there apperance. then be suspcious. though what can u do. u cannot report a crime before it has been committed. best thing is to not leave anything worth taking. or to lock in a heavy safe.

does not guerentee that u will not get robbed but all i know is that the harder u make it the more likey they will go somewhere else.

unfortuanlty people normally only take procautions when it is too late.

same as me but i learn from my mistakes. what might cost me more now might save me allot in the future.

basically investested robots. this is the future!

good luck re recovery of your items; sounds familiar we 'lost' 90-100k electronics gear in April on Phuket; no longer living there so nil hope recovery as cannot follow up, have seen two news items of 'serial burglars' caught in Chalong where we were living, but no call saying 'hey we have your laptop etc'.

Police helpfully suggested it would have been traded for yaba same day - but the next step must be some kind of on-selling, had never seen a shop dealing in 2nd hand electronics in our immediate area, but presume there are some in Patong or Phuket Town.

As I said, good luck to you.

Have insurance -- insurance policies in Thailand don't cover laptops or cellphones -- found out after I read my policy.

Not true. I have my laptop specified on my insurance for both accidental damage and theft. I insured my belongings with Ensure.

I also keep a backup of all my valuable data on a portable drive in my safe and another at a clients house.

Matt.

I will check out Ensure. I have a homeowner's policy with the largest insurance company in Thailand and after my burglary called the agent who told me all Thai policies carry waivers on laptops or cellphones unless they write in a special inclusion clause, as these two items are always stolen. To cover a cellphone/laptop was basically the same price as buying new ones, so I didn't consider it. You must be paying extra for this. If not I will switch to Ensure.

Sorry to hear about you loss - that sucks,

Maybe totally unrealated but there was a poster on the Tesco Lamai noticeboard yesterday for a used HP Laptop. Think 20K from memory.

Worth a try.
