bryanjackson Posted February 23, 2003 Share Posted February 23, 2003 I've lived in chiang mai for 3 yrs now and have done some pub crawling and came to the conclusion that chiang mai is a 'family' town, so, i made a family and stopped crawling in the poor excuses for night life here. there's a few tourist traps with 'dogs' working by the night market and loy khrow rd and three bars whith dancers that i wouldn't take out for free if they offered it, but they won't offer it as here in chiang mai is where the ugly dogs can make a living, because they can't cut the mustard in pattaya or bkk. so, give up on night life in chiang mai and save your money for a trek . c.m. is a day town!! I last visited about 10 years ago when a mate of mine had a bar in the Jeyod Rd not far from the Wat and the Boombumgrad Hotel (Golden Bar). p1p Posted March 14, 2003 Share Posted March 14, 2003 :blues: Oh Boy! Chiang Mai is a town with a multitude of nightspot choices without looking at the "Red Light" options. The main Red Light area is Loi Kroh road in the center of town however this street also hosts the Mango Tree Cafe with a good selection of drinks and a choice of Western or Thai food. You can sit outside and watch the goings on in the bars! Also in the center of town are the Irish Pub and places like True Blue bar. On the river there are the famous Good View, Riverside and Brasserie restaurants, all with top quality live music and mainly Thai food. The Brasserie in particular is famous for Took, the owner and one of the best guitarists around He plays after 11pm. On Huak Kaew road is The Pub, which is exactly what it says, a good place to drink and meet people. On the opposite side of town you will find the Gymkana club, which welcome visitors. All of these places are hangouts for local expatriates so you should be able to get additional info in any of them. This small list is just a taster. Most of the population of Lanna, however, are still farmers and live in villages. No BG's but you may just meet a nice local, might be your next best friend and someone to show you around. CM isn't a party destination. Totally awesome restaurant, a class of its own in Chiang Mai: The House The Bear's Den.. not sure if it gets busy these days. Failing that, O'Malleys near Anusarn Market / Night Bazar. More budget/backpacker style: Forest Drunk, in Ratchadamnoen soi 6 or 7, the one going through the Three Kings monument area. Also the area on the first traffic lights on Ratwithee Rd coming from the moat, past the Irish pub which is worth a look see too. The big pub-restaurants along the river. etc, etc, etc... cutethaigirl Posted August 16, 2004 Share Posted August 16, 2004 I would say that apart from a few bars around the night market and opoosite the MANGO TREE - plug the kind of bar described above is very hard to find. No tourist would just bump into Sayuri!! That guy was looking and happily found. Try any one of the other 5000+ bars ranging from a roadside table to High Tech discos and EVERYTHING in between. It is true to say that most visitors come to see the abundance of superb sites during the day but thaere are MANY 'normal' places to enjoy a drink in the evening. A few named here. Cluster of decent places on the river, Goodview, Riverside etc. A good evening to be had, with good food if you want it. Also felt very safe at chucking out time....unlike here in UK. Yes, Drunken Flower,also been there in the first Soi behind Amari Rincome hotel. Which is on the corner of Nimmanhaemin & Huay Kaew Roads. 5mins further up Huay Kaew, The Pub. 10mins further up on the other side of road, Darling wine bar. She is a local country/folk singer, very popular with the locals. Nice view, great music, food is okay. If you have never heard traditional Lanna folk songs, it is a must go. In my single partying days when I first came to Chiang Mai I rarely left Bubbles by myself.. And at that time completely didn't even have any money to pay for anything whatsoever so no I never paid for anything.. Wooden/bamboo structure that overlooks the waterfall. Great food, not overly expensive (a (little) bit below typical Riverside prices) There was a fun Cowboy-Western band of three long haired dudes playing yesterday with guitars, violin, banjo, big-base, the works. That was fun asking for totally cheesy songs; for some reason, at that time, even "Country Road" just kind of worked there. Also very good food. Order the BBQ'd fish in herbs, it takes forever but is really good, also the more GoodView-ish dishes like the fried chicken with lemon and maysonnaise and the edible 3-flavour taro basket with a mix of meat, seafood, cashew nuts and bell-pepper was excellent. (This dish called the 'Riverside Basket' (Takra Rimping) at The Riverside. ) Also plenty of Northern chillie dips & curries. sabaijai Posted August 19, 2004 Share Posted August 19, 2004 (edited) A new place with a lot of potential, and a good place to meet Thais, is Take-Off. It's owned by the same Thai man that started the original Old West on Soi Sarasin in Bangkok, 20 years ago, which spawned a legion of imitators all over Thailand. He went to the States for awhile to dabble in the used jeans trade for awhile, but is back and living in Ch Mai. This one's not in 'old west' style, but is semi-open-air, in an old wooden building with comfortable sofas, chairs and tables. They host local art openings every month or so, and on those nights its packed with local artists. Nga Surachai (Thailand's closest equivalent of Bob Dylan, and founding member of Caravan, the band that started phleng pheua cheewit) plays solo there once in awhile as do and Caravan as a group and other acts. It hasn't really 'taken off' yet but once word gets around, hopefully it will. It's off Huay Kaew Rd. Look for a tall sign at the mouth of the alley to the immediate left (northwest side) of Coca Suki on Huay Kaew. Follow the kooky wall paintings till you reach the place. If you have wheels, best to use the soi on the southeast side of Coca, as it leads to the Take-Off's parking lot. Other places where locals hang out for drinking, music and talk include Sut Sanaen, off the W side of the canal road just N of Huay Kaew, and the cavernous Tawan Daeng off the E side of the canal road a few hundres metres S of Huay Kaew. The Vietnamese-style kuay jap (a thick soup with rice noodles, basil and pork) at Sut Sanaen is delish, and the trio that play there nightly does a lot of interesting Thai originals. One of the hottest local spots in town right now is the Monkey Club, on Soi (?), Nimanhaemin. I think it's Soi 9 but I forget, though I've been there a few times, know it by sight. Packed every night, although three years ago it didn't look like it was going to develop a following. (So there's hope for Take-Off). Another is the 61 Club on the river near the N end of Charoen Rat Rd. One of the Silly Fools (Thailand's hottest alt-rock band at the moment) owns a share in it, or so I've heard. Samut Prakan is the 2nd largest city, and Nonthaburi the third.
