Manipulators no match for SET regulators

BANGKOK: -- Government regulators can cope with all the strategies used to manipulate share prices and investors need not worry, the Stock Exchange of Thailand president said on Monday.

The help of stock-broking houses is not yet required to trace attempts to manipulate stock prices, the SET President, Kittirat Na Ranong told TNA.

Not all attempts to manipulate stock prices are successful, Mr. Kittrat said.

It is common for stock markets to be volatile, he added.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which regulates the stock market, recently acted against moves by certain investors connected to politicians to manipulate share prices.

There is no need yet to enlist the help of brokers, Mr. Kittrat said. The majority of Thais buy their shares through securities firms.

On the whole, both the SEC and the SET are bright spots in what really is a growing effort to combat (certain kinds of) economic crime in Thailand. The problem, of course, is that the regulatory process is fundamentally inimical to the cronyism that drives almost all Thai (Chinese) commercial interaction. I wish them luck.
