And now for something completely different...

Referees learn English swear words ahead of World Cup 2010

Rooney and co will have to keep it clean in South Africa...

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney may be surprised if he indulges his penchant for 'industrial language' in England's opening World Cup game against the USA on Saturday.

Carlos Eugenio Simon, the Brazilian who will oversee the game, has, like all officials at the tournament, been given a list of English profanities in order that bad language can be controlled during games.

“We can’t do this in 11 different languages, but at least we have to know the swear words in English," said Roberto Braatz, one of Simon's assistant referees

Altemir Hausmann, the other assistant, added: We have to learn what kind of words the players say. All players swear and we know we will hear a few ‘son of a...’"

Rooney's tendency to let his temper loose when the pressure is on was shown once again by his conduct in a friendly against local side Platinum Stars earlier this week when the England striker was booked for dissent. The referee concerned highlighted the player's abusive language after the game.

England boss Fabio Capello has reportedly spoken to the striker about staying in control, but his England team-mates don't seem to see the behaviour as a problem.

"A lot was made of it but at times Wayne’s passion has been misread for anger," Emile Heskey said.

"When he came on the pitch [against Platinum Stars] he got the lads going. We probably needed that because we were a little bit flat. He picked us up and gave us the boost we needed.

"It’s not anger. He just wants to win. He is so passionate and he wears everything on his sleeve."

Why are English swear words singled out if 11 different languages are spoken, it's discrimination I tell you, pure bias, pure racism, pure prejudice, pure religious persecution, pure antipureness :)

Now why would they leave after their group three game. They beat Australia and Spain in recent friendlies and are the 14th ranked team. I actually picked them to win their bracket, I also picked Mexico to win their bracket but that doesn't look so good after their opening tie :D

:D

Just a bit of him having us (meaning me) yanks on you know. After all, didn't the brits invent the "football" anyhow? (Or so I was assured by a drunken brit in Bangkok, once)

But anyhow, we shall see what we shall see. The games are played on the field anyhow, not over a pint in a bar somewhere, and that's where they will be decided.

I think the U.S will make it into the 16 anyhow. With a little luck and some good play they could go further. So we shall see, what we shall see.

:)

P.s. I once tried to explain American football, and it's tactics and sublety to a brit friend. I might just as well have been talking to the wall. Really, just try explaining "flooding the zone" and a "pick and go" play to a drunken brit. Hopeless. Almost as bad as trying to explain Cricket to a yank.
