World Cup Words & Phrases

I was thinking that since we're not going to get any English commentary for the World Cup maybe I could use it as an opportunity to pick up some new Thai vocab. Here are some phrases I've learned:

lum naa - offside

bai liang - yellow card

bai daeng - red card

luhk tawd - penalty

Maybe we could create a glossary of Thai football commentators' phrases?

(Feel free to correct my transliteration)

Cheers

You will see several Thai football phrase lessons. I did not listen to them.

Just passing it along for football fans.

Nice link there Klons,

From the first lesson. These are more like phrases you would use while watching the game.

อืมต้องอย่างนี้ซิ - yeah that's it (after your team scores)

วันนี้มีได้เสีย - someone has to win, someone has to lose today

อเมริกายิงเลยจะเลี้ยงไว้ทำไม - America should just attack

อังกฤษชนะเหนๆ - England will win

อังกฤษหมูแพ้ชัวร์ - England will lose for sure

ตีไข่ให้แตก - c'mon get the first goal

These are how they are approximately translated in the lesson, i've dropped the วะ particle which he's used, you can add it yourself if that's how you'd like to speak but i tend not to.

I'll add more as i get through them.

There's also ชนเสา - hit the post

ได้เปรียบ - to play advantage

There appear to only be two football lessons, here are some phrases from the second lesson.

โห่จอมtechnique - wow, great technique

วันนี้มาเจอหมู - today should be easy

กระดูกคนละเบอร์ - these teams play on different levels

ส่งไม่เอาเพื่อน - a wayward shot or pass that goes nowhere

อิตาลีได้สองเม็ดแล้ว - Italy scored 2 already (that's the first time i've heard เม็ด the classifier for seeds used for a goal)

บราซิลได้ลูกหนึ่งแล้ว - Brazil scored 1 already

goalเหนียวมาก - the goalkeeper is very good

someone enlighten me on the alternate meaning of หมู:

ฝรั่งเศส หมู แพ้ ชัวร์

france will definitely lose

หมู

[ADJ] easy; simple; comfortable S.ง่าย, สะดวก, กล้วยๆ A.ยาก Ex. งานนี้ไม่ใช่งานหมูเลย

[N] pig Ex. ชาวชนบทบางแห่งจะแบ่งส่วนใต้ถุนไว้เลี้ยงสัตว์ เช่น เป็ด, ไก่, หมู ฯลฯ

(NECTEC Lexitron 2 TH-EN)

อังกฤษออกไปแล้ว - England are out! :whistling:

I would like to keep on the subject of England's defeat for personal reasons.

Another way to say it is - ตกรอบ to be eliminated

The opposite of which means, to advance to the next round - เข้ารอบ

Football's going home :D

Our cartoon friends at Thai Rath have a fairly easy cartoon concerning the end of the World Cup at

http://www.thairath.co.th/column/pol/chaicartoon/96357

Would it be fair to translate เจ้ามือโต๊ะบอล as a 'football bookie' and รับจ้างทวงหนี้ as 'to hire enforcers (debt collectors)'?

Yeah that's right. Where i live these debt collectors ride around in pairs, always on a Honda CBR 150, with the full helmet on so no one knows who they are.
