I understand the rule is that you have to apply for 1 year extensions (regardless on what basis) in your place of residence (where you actually live and may be work). It is not based on where the thai wife's house registration is.

In Chiangmai immigration does not follow this rule every time. As I am already very uncomfortable with Chiangmai immigration services do I have the option to always take care of visa issues in Bangkok?

Please advise.

If you are on an extension of stay based on marriage, you are supposed to live with your wife, who is supposed to live where she is registered. Some offices seem to be more lenient with this than others.

You can only go to your local immigration office.

This is an ambivalent answer. Many thai wives live with their farang husbands, but not in the village where they are registered. As a Thai you can only register in the town where you are from, but not in the town where a thai wife is living with her husband. I understand the rule is that you have to apply in the place(immigration) where you actually live with the thai wife.

My question was if you can always go to bkk for any visa extension reason as they seem to be the only ones knowing some of the law some of the time. In Chiangmai they nothing about the immigration rules.

Thank you

You have to go to your own immigration office for the area where you live. Bangkok is only for residents of Bangkok.

As said, some immigration offices will consider that yo be the place where your wife is registered in a Tabien ban.

Edit:

A Thai can be registered anywhere on the tabien ban. Problem is that if you rent you will need the permission of the landlord and many don't want that.

No you can not use Bangkok unless you live in Bangkok. You can talk with them to confirm rules but any extension of stay will have to be done in your residence location. A Thai can put there name on the blue book of the residence they occupy and with online database these days it is an easy process.
