SONGKHLA: -- Haze has covered parts of the southern province of Songkhla, particularly coastal districts, resulting in poor visibility.

Wanchai Sak-udomchai, acting director of the southern meteorological office for the eastern coast, said winds had carried smoke from wildfires in Indonesia's central Sumatra, spreading it over parts of Malaysia and the provinces of Songkhla, Satun, Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat.

Here we go again, Indonesia's annual burning season has started. Those clowns will never cease to amaze me: they seem to be the only people in the world with a national consensus to axe and burn their own country down to the bare rock.

Of course, they aren't "wildfires", they are started deliberately.

Smoke from Indonesian forest fires reaches Satun

SATUN: -- The South-western wind has blown smoke from forest fires in Indonesia across in the southern province of Satun, posing a health risk for local residents.

Local reports suggest that the smoke has already engulfed much of the province, and motorists are complaining that their visibility has been reduced to less than one kilometre.

Residents, particularly motorcycle taxi drivers, are, meanwhile, complaining of sore eyes and noses.

Mr. Chalo Phiwphong, a 78 year-old fisherman, told reporters today that the smoke was thickening each day, and that it was even worse over the sea than on land.

He warned that boats without satellite navigation systems could easily get lost.

Smoke envelopes South for fourth day

SONGKHLA: -- Smoke from forest fires in Indonesia yesterday enveloped much of Thailand's southern region for the fourth day running, with public health officials distributing masks to local residents to help prevent the risk of respiratory problems.

According to the south-eastern coastal meteorological centre, based in Songkhla, the smoke appears to have been blown over from forest fires in the centre of Sumatra although this theory will have to be confirmed by the Department of Pollution Control.

Although the Department of Pollution Control has said that dust particle levels in Songkhla and Satun are not above the standard ceiling, Dr. Theerawat Kornsing, Songkhla’s acting chief public health officer, told reporters that masks were being distributed to the local population, and that the situation was being closely monitored.

Over a year ago I had the same problem with sore eyes while riding due to smoke in the air. That was when I was riding in the north of Thailand.

So if the Thai government complains, they should clear the air in their own backyard first.
