I have to make a quick visit to UK this week. I normally hire a car at the airport in UK, but I may have a problem this time. I appear to have mislaid my UK licence and I wonder if I can hire a car using my Thai 5 year licence.

Anybody managed this this before or been refused?

Hi prefabs

Good question, I’m due back in UK middle of next month, no idea where my UK license is, just got my Thai one.

If “gotlost” is right, that’s one problem sorted with getting about. Now! Roll on the next issue, having lived and only driven in Thailand for 5 years, will I survive my journeys without getting my light punched out for driving Thai style!

You are right there. I have had to stop more than once as I have been edging out into busy traffic lanes. Had a few heartstoppers myself

For clarification.

Holders of a foreign, i.e. non EU, licence can drive in the UK for up to 12 months using that licence; there is no need to get an International Driving Permit, though you may wish to do so as it will provide a translation of your Thai licence.

For those coming to the UK to take up residence this 12 month period begins on their first entry as a resident.

For those visiting the UK the period begins on their latest entry.

I have a 5 year thai motorbike license, and I am UK citizen, can I use my thai motorbike in the UK as well?

I asked that question when I was back in the UK in March. I had to go the the Police Station to get a Criminal Record check done so I took the opportunity to enquire.

e.

The answer was a clear NO!. While a Thai citizen would be able to use the licence for up to a year, as a returning British citizen my Thai licence would not be valid and I would have to do the CBT to ride on Britisg roads and then gain a full UK licence.
