Fuel Economy, Pickup Vs. Small Car

Recommended Posts

i have a toyota vigo 2.5 4dr 4x4, i get about 800km on a full tank, about 1900 baht so that works out at 2.4b/km

i was thinking about buying something like a honda city so save money on gas but i read on the specs it gets 11km/liter city and 14km/liter highway, so say 12.5mk/liter average. at 33b/liter for petrol (i think, i don't buy it) that's 2.6b/km which is actually more than a big ass pickup truck!

why would that be? i guess diesel must be a lot more efficient than petrol.

my friend has an LPG conversion and he says its great and gets about 1b/km, so there is a big saving if i do the LPG conversion but nothing on the standard petrol version, pretty interesting i think.

I read some tests of the new honda Jazz that it does around 1 to 16 in the city and 1 to 19 on the long runs couple that with 30 baht a liter fuels (the new ones run on anything) and it comes out a lot cheaper.

I will let you guys know what the figures are once i get my Jazz... i hope i will get it next week. I seen it today.

Think l will stick with my trusty truck, sod the fuel cost. :crying:

Usually you and I see eye to eye, but on this one you do realise just how far safety has come since those cars were engineered right?

And to the OP, yes there are big savings going with LPG...if you ignore the buy in cost. Let's say you find a fly-by-night place to install a system for 15 000 THB. At your 1,5 THB/km savings, you need 10 000 km just to break even. My wife has been averaging some 500 km per week over the last two years; a similar system for us would have taken something like 8 months to earn the money back. If you do a lot of city driving are you going to rack up the mileage like that?

By 'those cars" you mean the "red one" and the "black one" right ;) \

Seriously, even I'm having a hard time telling what they were. heh :D

Please dont refrain from stating the fact that it was the drivers that caused these accidents. Excessive speed was the defining factor in both of these accidents. The BMW in the bottom picture was rumoured to have been doing in excess of 220kph when it hit the tree. (Goes to show how strong the trees are hey?)

Drive safe and these death traps are just as safe as any other car. It is the drivers of these vehicles that are the bringers of death.

After all what is the alternative. We can't all be fat Americans, driving 3 tonne 4X4's because they fair better in a crash with another 3 tonne 4X4.

bottom picture is a red hatch with 4 bolt rims and looks like frontwheeldrive. What kind of BMW would that be?

Sure the 2.5 diesel Vigo gets great mileage, but for the extra comfort and ease of parking, safer to drive (IF a 4X4 doesnt hit you) and generally an easier car alround, I'll take my Vios every day.

at 08.53 you said we cant all drive around in gas hustling pickups, and now you choose for your own comfort to drive around in a gas hustling Vios:D :D :D

Firstly I am not fat, I'm fluffy.

And looking at those cars I initally thought the bottom one was a BMW (318ti to be specific) also, but peering at it further I'm thinking it's a mid-to-late 90's Honda Civic. The black one is a Puegeot of about the same vintage right?

The black car is a Peugeot 106.

The red one is the notoriously brittle Ford Escort Mk5 Similar to this :

The swage line, the 4 stud wheels and whole there the fuel cap used to be gives it away.

My 2 cents :)

Interesting question by the OP and answers by those with both.

Because I was quite impressed with my mileage when i first got my pickup.

I have a small compact in America and the mileage was better on my pickup here (diesel of course)

I wanted to bet a friend of mine one day on a trip that we follow each other and that i would get better gas mileage than him.

We never got to do the trip together with 2 vehicles but I think I would've won. (I saw his driving habits and know mine are more efficient)

I drive a Toyota vios and get around 650kms from 40litres which last time I filled up cost 1,200 Baht.

But it all depends on where you drive and HOW you drive as to how much fuel you use.

That's more than 38MPG - wow, very impressive driving! :)

Even hypermiler's are only in the 40-43MPG range with the Yaris, and that's with over-inflated tires, manual shift, no driving > 80km/hr, no air-con, shutting off the engine whenever stationary etc etc.. To get 38MPG in Thailand is no mean feat - congrats! :D
