Millions of flies invade Sa Kaeow village

SA KAEW: -- A plague of millions of flies has descended on a village in Thailand's eastern province of Sa Kaew, leading to fears of a public health problem.

According to villagers in Nong Pa Mak, in Sa Kaew’s Wattana Nakhon district, the flies have invaded the entire village of 80 households.

TNA reporters who visited the village yesterday were greeted by the sight of windows and doors shut fast against the invasion, while trees and buildings were black with the insects.

A village resident, Mrs. Chansawang Srikul, told reporters that villagers were having to eat their meals under mosquito nets, and that their faces and bodies became covered with flies immediately they went outside.

She also noted that the villagers were afraid that the flies could spread diseases.

The problem appears to be caused by a local industrial waste disposal factory, which villagers say is also causing noxious odours across the area.

Owned by the son of a well-known local politician, the factory is located just two kilometres from the village.

Sa Kaew Governor Somchai Chumrat, who visited the factory after receiving complaints from the villagers, told reporters that the problem was due to incorrect wastewater management, a claim disputed by the factory’s owners.

He warned that the factory would be shut down immediately unless it addressed the issue and complied with environmental health standards.
