Lottery cheat lady gets 9 years for lese majeste

BANGKOK: -- A woman who allegedly claimed to be Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's niece and cheated those who believed she knew winning lottery numbers in advance was yesterday given a nine-year jail term for lese majeste.

The Criminal Court found Kannika, or Boom, Tangpanich, 36, guilty of lese majeste according to Article 112 of the Criminal Code and sentenced her to nine years' imprisonment for insulting Their Majesties the King and Queen and the Crown Prince in Phitsanulok and nearby areas in February 2003.

The court said it saw no reason for the court to commute the sentence as the defendant had denied the charges ever since the case was filed by the prosecution on June 14, 2004. The woman was also facing legal action for allegedly cheating Duangjai sae Sueng, 47, owner of Suan Nam restaurant in Samut Prakan, of 40,000 baht earlier this year for giving hoax winning government lottery numbers. She allegedly lied that she was a lawyer with access to Government Lottery Office staff and knew winning numbers in advance.

I would think that Duangjai sae Sueng didn't have "clean hands", believing that she was cheating the government. Too bad Duangjai won't see any jail time.

Am I the only one who was hoping that this was about the lottery seller who stole the winning ticket from one of her customers.

No, I was hoping that too, but WAY too soon for that little problem to be resolved.

Had to look this up:-

Lese majeste: An offence against the "dignity of the sovereign". Like painting a moustache on their statue, calling them a poopy-head, or criticising their performance as a ruler.

So watch out all you people who suggest that Poopy-Head Toxin is not as good a ruler as he might be ..... 9 years in the slammer coming up :o
