Think It's Dangerous Here In Issan

This is a taken from a routers story abouut my home town getting it's first Latino Mayor in over a Century.

Los Angeles had 515 murders in 2003 and 518 in 2004, when U.S. violent crime overall actually fell.

This is just the City of L.A. not all of southern California.

I'd much rather hang out in Udon.

Too bloody true. There's less criminals (not counting traffic offences) in Surin Province than there is in my local pub in Ramsgate. :o

I suggest you check this world wide chart before you get complacent.  Thailand ranked 8th in the world for the number of murders in 2000.  That is the number - not the rate of murders. :o

Don't doubt that a bit, but for an old farrang in Udon, who doesn't hang out in bars, avoids confrontation when possible. I feel much safer here at the moment here then I did in L.A.

Some interesting stats on that site Lop - I see that Thailand has the highest proportion of women prisoners in jail at 20%. I wonder why :o

Probably due to the gambling laws, whiskey making, and drugs. Or are they just evil? :o

When ladies get caught gambling, don't they just have to stay overnight?

would that show up in the stat?

but some other interesting stat's:

drug offenses Thai No 6

illicit drugs Thai No 4

total crimes Thai No 17

and top :

murder with firearms : South Africa

Colombia

THAILAND :D

US

Mexico...

and taking into consideration that those figures are for 2000 (Except US 1999), long before Toksin's campaign against drugs when "dealers killed dealers". :D

Believe gambling usually results in a suspended jail sentence the first time and a fine. But am sure many get caught again and others can not pay fine.

The old tv server seems to be playing up today. :o

Anyway i feel way,way safer here in Isaan than many parts of London. You walk around Kennington at night on your own.Felt safer in Queens,New York than South Brixton.

You are spot on LoveDaBlues the other statistic is simplistic. On a murder per capita rate Thailand is not in the first 46.

Thailand was obviously not included in that chart. France with the same population as Thailand is included on both charts. Thailand had 5 times as many murders as France. :o

I'm from L.A.  who ever said anything about Issan being dangerous?

Me to, just recalled a few posts about the dangers here and I really didn't see it, so I wanted people to think a bit about what they do have here.

You have to awfully unlucky or foolish, or intentioanlly putting yourself in a bad situation's to find violence here. It happens but not nearly on the level you see there. I usually stay homes evenings these days, but before my marriage I was out amongst it every night. I was never so much as threatened, if Thai's did anything it was to try to help me. Maybe I didn't have any problems because I went to the Thai places.

Me too , I feel much safer walking down the streets of Downtown Korat or even Bangkok late at night than I do in Chicago . It is actually very refreshing but as we all know it is always best to keep our eyes open where ever we are .

I feel safer in Hawaii but since I can't afford that, then I live here. I live a better way of life (cheaper food and housing) and I have a great family here and am happy to live here. To say that I feel safer here would be a LIE. Granted Hawaii can't be compared totally or even at all with the rest of the BIG cities of the US but it's still a great place. I was in Hawaii for 24 years and was never drugged and robbed. I lived here over the last 3 years and have been robbed, burnt with ciggarettes and dumped on the road. I can't blame Thailand for that because I let my guard down but I at least think I wouldn't have had this happen to me in Hawaii.

Just my opinion, doesn't mean that it means anything

It really doesn't matter as it's all water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned . I learned a valuble lesson and will go on. Still it does make you think about what is going to happen in the future.

I think it's fair to say that was a one off though wasn't it Kringle? And it did take place in a seedier part of Thailand where crime towards farang is more likely to be rife.

Not that I can agree or disagree with you about Hawaii I have never been there but just adding some balance to it.

I think the important thing to note when looking at crime figures in Thailand compared to your won home towns is that here the foreigner is rarely the victim of violent crime and it is easier avoided. In the west you can be walking down the street minding your won business and be a victim of it, but here that doesn't often happen.

Interesting thing I once noticed was when I was walking into a snooker hall near my apartment and my Burmese mate didn't want to go in at first, he said "too many dodgy people" and thought that there might be some trouble it seemed. I didn't follow the reasoning, I've played pool there many a time as we did that night with no hassle at all.

After thinking on it I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that if you are a farang despite them thinking you are probably got a wedge of cash on you, that they rather leave you alone and prefer to commit any crimes against their own people where they know the situation and outcome better. As a farang we are an unknown quanity to a certain degree which is often to our advantage.

Figures don't lie but liars figure. The numbers can be made to reflect any situation you want them to show. I base my feelings on if I am safe walking on the street after dark. I can say that I have done a lot of stupid things here in Thailand and never had a problem. The last place I lived in the USA was the Los Angeles area in California. I lived in Montebello and I CAN tell you that you don't want to be on the streets after dark. There is a lot of petty theft here in Thailand but violent crimes are few and far between if you avoid gambling and drugs. :o

Some might consider Sukhumvit to be a seedy area but I do not. This happened to me in an area I thought would be fairly safe. It was my own fault for letting my guard down. It definitely woke me up. Like anywhere in the world, you always have to be aware of what's happenning around you.

I can seem to get this pic to show up but will try again.

If I followed this correctly what happened to you happened in Bangkok, not Issan?

When I'm in a tourist area Bangkok, Pattaya or any oo the others I'm a lot less comfortable then when I'm in Udon. Your right Hawaii is a wonderful place but to rich for my blood as well.

Im sorry to hear that kringle ,

The only place in the world I have ever been " mugged " meaning I was robbed and beaten by 3 not so gentleman was In the capital of Hawaii . Not to say that it is / was a bad place but I should have known better . It had all the signs of " if it will happen it will happen here " On the other hand Hawaii is a beautiful place and for the most part was friendly towards me but that never happened in all my life in Chigago and that is a scary place ...at times . Here they politely ask you to hand over you money with a gun in you face and no blood is shed .

It's worse. :o

The 2nd generation are like rabid animals.

They won't hesitate to spray a cop shop with automatic fire or attack the police on the street.

They regard all Caucasion and Asian women as "sluts", their word, not mine, Hence all the gang rapes.... they show no remorse on sentencing day and regard jail time as a joke,

I just hope they meet a few "bubbas" in there. :D

A judge recently described them as a dangerous cancer in Aus society.

Very unlike their parents who were very law abiding.

My husband is from Issan but we now live in the UK, he feels much safer in London than he ever did in his small town in Khon Kaen. We lived in his town for 3 months before moving to the UK & I saw more crap happen than I did in 7 years in Samui & had more harrassment than I had in my whole time in LOS.

In Issan, the mil's house is shut up like fort knoxs everynight & never left empty, ever. There is always someone in that house & they have nothing of any real value. The house is ramashackle & their possesions are fairly old, except the tv & washing machine I gave them when we moved to England, which were 3 years old but it didn't stop someone from trying to kick the door in one night last year & frightening the ###### out of two old ladies & two small kids, which is why, when we went back this year we replaces the doors, windows & secured the front gate. Crime is everywhere, crap people are everywhere & dont' be lulled into a false sense of security in LOS as it can happen to you, but like in your own country, it's usually opportunists.

:o

If you think those are from burning off warts, then I don't want to go to your doctor. I didn't feel a thing till the next day. If you have some warts that need to come off, then please PM me as I would love to do the same to you. Can't quarantee it won't hurt while I'm doing it and that I'll hit every wart and won't say it won't hurt after it's done, but I'll gladly show you what it feels like you fvckwit.
