I am expat Work Permit holder with and "O" visa, my wife's also an expat with a visa that piggy backs on my WP. The situation is that we recently had a son, delivered in Bangkok. I am wondering if I need to get him a visa and if so, when? Our intention is to take a holiday in Japan mid August and Im a little concerned that if he doent have a visa I'll run into problems with the BIB immigration line.

Any advise out there?

Thanks,

Greg

First things first. You need to register the birth of your son at your embassy in Bangkok and arrange a passport for him. Leaving Thailand for the first time is no problem, just show his birth certificate and passport. Upon return he will be stamped in on a visa exempt or visa on arrival, depending on his nationality, or you could get him a Thai visa while in Japan. You and wife will need re-entry permits from immigration to cover your extension of stay.

Thank you for your input. The boy has been registered at our embassy and I expect his passport to be delivered any day now. Are you telling me that the BIB at immigration will give him a visa exempt stamp when we return from a short trip overseas? For the record my intentions arent to avoid getting his visa however, I cant see any time to do this between today and our holiday. Of course if I have to I will take care of this head of time or while away but I'd rather not and hold out until I have more time.

The suggestion was to obtain a visa in Japan prior to return to Thailand and enter using that. Airline could require proof of onward travel within 30 days without a visa to show as that is a visa exempt requirement.

Your son does not need a visa in his passport to leave Thailand. Upon return your son will be stamped back into Thailand by immigration at the airport. He should get a visa for Thailand while in Japan to facilitate his airplane boarding and re-entry into Thailand or have a ticket out of Thailand within 30 days to meet the visa exempt requirements.

Just bring along the Thai birth certificate, that is proof that he was born in Thailand and therefor doesn't hold a visa. That is all there is to it. On return he would need a visa.
