Gps Recommendation Needed Please

Featured Replies

I want to purchase a GPS for my car. Not sure all what I need as far as features so any info would be most appreciated, I need it to be at least:

a. Thailand use at a minimum

b. user friendly

c. audio & visual in English

d. easy to read with bold highlights when to turn with audio

e. not sure what if any other features needed please recommend

f. budget is Not unlimited

Please help this poor soul with this endeavor, I have used Goggle Maps with some success, but not always clear as when to turn, etc. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Hi,

If budget is unlimited, how come you are a poor soul?

Well, to tell you truth, there its hard to put finger on a particular system as I am still surveying on which GPS system to buy.

My obvious choice is still "Garmin" as its global and can be used in every county but then I found some local brands offering more advanced and better features. I guess most of features you are looking for can be found in any advanced version of GPS.

Anyways I'd vote for Nuvi 310 or at least Nuvi 1460 (considering no budget constraint).

Otherwise users are happy even with Nuvi 200 or 205.

The best way is visit some dealer shop. I visited one at MBK (4th Floor, C Zone), called I-system.

You can ask for Mr. Aric at 086-300-9000.

Hope it helps

I paid 9000 Baht for my MIO in Pantip Plaza, came with 'SpeedNavi' software in both Thai and English, male or female. TW calls it my 'Mia Noi' because when it comes to directions I take more notice of it than her  .

Even has the narrow dirt roads out here in the rice paddies featured quite accurately.

The only issue in buying GPS other than Garmin brand is that one can't be sure if these local brands can work in other countries as well.

As for Garmin, it's global....wherever you go, just buy local navigation software, install and use it which may not happen

in case of other brands like MIO, Leona, Kamaaz, I-Fox etc.

BigSkip, you have to make a distinction between

– hardware, eg, Garmin, Nuvi, etc.

– software (maps), eg ESRI, etc.

I haven’t used any of these in Thailand yet but others will hopefully come and tell you about their experiences. bdenner has already mentioned that he is happy with his Mio (hardware) and SpeedNavi (software)

I have a Garmin, use it on my car and motorcycle. would be lost without it. the maps are easy to update, there is a guy in Pattaya that sells them and does the updates. He has all the maps worldwide, so makes it nice. Have had this one for 3+ years and never a problem. Garmin is my only choice.

Wildoates,

Can you tell me your model name? I am not sure how effective is to have 4.3" against 3.6" and also the junction view.

Kindly share your experience.

Garmin nuvi 205 is what i have and i love it, gets me around all the little side streets in Pattaya, only problem is wife sits in the car arguing with it, let me down once came pre set with international border for cambodia i stuck with it and ended up miles down dirt tracks in 100s of acres of potatos, it then proclaimed you have arrived at your destination, middle of no where god knows where. funny now but scary at the time. 4900 at tesco carrefour are cheaper but never hae them in stock. i see tesco have now put there prices up. somebody will come on and tell you the name of a place that delivers already set up in English, i used them after, good guy at the shop, i think gary a is the name of the guy on here to ask.

just checked Gary A is his user name esri v 10.1 is what you need on it. has malaysia thailand indonisia, english version comes on cd with it. maybe if i was to buy again i would buy the bigger screen version.

Are you saying the map was wrong or that somebody moved the border or you don't like potatoes? The GPS took you to your programmed destination, didn't it?
