A 51-year-old public servant who took $5900 in bribes to say second-hand cars were roadworthy without inspecting them has been jailed for three years.

Defence lawyer Mark Andrews told the District Court today that his client Barry William Tanner had been an "exemplary" vehicle examiner with the Department for Planning and Infrastructure for 11 years when he "succumbed" to an "overbearing" used car dealer in 2008.

There would be no need for his services here as im pretty much sure (by law) you can sell a car in any condition whatsoever, so long as you can find a stupid buyer..

On second thoughts this may qualify as a job that a thai person CANNOT do

Then again the competiton from far to many fellow bribetakers would render this guy all but redundant

But carry on Australia, the government condones and even legalises the extortion of the taxpayers for what are essential services, especially when the extortion is perpertrated by big businesses

Bribery is or was rife in queensland, no names no pack drill but it is common knowledge and not hearsay, that certain council members were susceptible to the odd brown envelope as an aid to planning permission,it is not as bad now as it was 15 years ago when we arrived ,but it is still on a scale compareable with thailand,
