Fugitive Scot wanted over horrific sex attacks is tracked down in Bangkok

A SCOTS fugitive accused of horror sex attacks has been tracked down by the Sunday Mail in Bangkok's red-light district. George Hoolahan, 60, has been on the run for more than 10 years after being accused of raping two 18-year-old girls.

Hoolahan is wanted by police in Scotland and England and has regularly featured on most-wanted lists since failing to turn up for trial in 1999.

But he was left reeling after we tracked him down to his Thai bolthole, where he hangs out in a sleazy sex-for-sale bar.

Stunned Hoolahan said last night: "I've been found by the Sunday Mail. I think that I'll be coming back now. "If the cops said I was to jump on a plane, I would say aye. I don't think

I'll sleep well tonight." In addition to being wanted for the alleged double rape in England, Glaswegian Hoolahan is the subject of an arrest warrant for an alleged £100,000 financial scam in Scotland.

Last week, we tracked him down to a bar near Soi Cowboy - a street notorious for go-go bars, prostitutes and "lady boy" transvestites. The fugitive's full name is George Bernard Murray Hoolahan but in Thailand, he calls himself George Murray or George Bernard.

We trapped Hoolahan - who now works as a property developer - by posing as potential clients. After arranging to meet us at the Victoria Bar off Sukhumvit Road, Hoolahan arrived wearing white trousers and a pink polo shirt bearing a machine gun logo. When we asked him if he was wanted by police over the double rape allegations, he lied: "Aye. But that's all cleared up now."

"It was only a date rape kind of thing."

We told him the deal was off after revealing we knew about the decade-long manhunt for him. Earlier, we had told the police where to find him.

The alleged rapes took place in the seaside resort of Whitley Bay but Hoolahan failed to turn up when his case was called at a magistrates' court in North Tyneside.

For more than 10 years, he has been on Northumbria Police's most-wanted list and several publicity drives aimed at finding him have been fruitless. In the same year as the alleged rapes, Hoolahan was also being hunted by police in Glasgow over an alleged swindle.

He is accused of vanishing with around £100,000 from the coffers of his Glasgow firm Fuel Negotiators.

Scottish Crime Squad detectives hunted him over the withdrawal of cash from the company account.

The controversial company were slammed by trading standards officers and politicians for cashing in on gas privatisation by charging customers £25 to negotiate low prices with energy suppliers.

A report into their nancial a airs was sent to the scal and an arrest warrant was issued for Hoolahan.

Last night, Hoolahan said he would willingly return to Scotland. But he then launched a vile attack on his alleged victims in a self-pitying whine. He said: "These girls were a couple of junkies. I was out with friends drinking and these two girls picked me up.

"They weer on drugs and we went back to my room. There were people in the next room and there was no shouting or bawling.

"It was a bit of a party. They went away the next day and they were staying in a homeless unit and my understanding is that if they were on drugs they would have been thrown out. So they blamed me.

"When made contact, I knew right away it was suspicious but I thought it was a cop. I've lost my whole life because of this.

"I miss Scotland. I miss my family. I don't know if my sisters or brothers are even alive.

"You can find anyone in the world If you hadn't found me, the police probably wouldn't have bothered their a**e."

Four years ago, police failed to catch Hoolahan in Operation Turn-Up, which led to the arrest of hundreds of wanted men. Two years later, he topped Northumbria Police's list of 833 bail-jumpers. Strathclyde Police said last night: "A warrant was issued for Mr Hoolahan's arrest in June 1999.

"So far, we have been unable to trace his whereabouts." i

Last night we passed on our dossier on Hoolahan to Northumbria Police and the Thai authorities.

Northumbria Police said: "We received a report from a member of the press suggesting that this individula was in Thailand. We are working with Interpol in relation to this report."

Until recently, Hoolahan rented a flat in Bangkok on Soi Cowboy but left owing rent. He split his time between there and Cha-am on the Gulf of Thailand, where he worked as a contractor specialising in home renovations.

His favourite haunt is the Tilac sex-for-sale bar on sleazy Soi Cowboy, a magnet for the sex tourists who flock to Thailand from the west.

The country offers tourists amazing culture, beaches, food and adventure.

But that is of little interest to the middle-aged men who travel there to spend holidays preying on prostitutes, male and femal, who are forced into the sex trade through poverty.

In recent years, increasing numbers of UK fugitives from justice have also used Thailand as a bolthole.

Earlier this month, two Britons were caught by Thai police.

Stuart Crawford, 44, is the prime suspect in the Semtpeber 2008 murder of his friend Michael Ryan in London.

John Fletcher, 66, was wanted in Cambodia on child sex charges.

The arrests were part of a crackdown on foreign criminal suspects in a bid to shed the country's image as a haven for those evading the law.

Great PR for Soi Cowboy. Sounds like home to me.:whistling: Glade they got this guy off the streets.

During his 11 year run from the police, his name periodically pops up...

This is from October 2006:

On the run

They're fugitives from the courts and part of a band of absconders who cost taxpayers tens of thousands of pounds.

The bail bandits have failed to turn up for appearances at magistrates' courts throughout the region - one suspect has been on the loose for seven years. All are charged with serious offences and, if convicted, would attract prison terms of more than 12 months.

A plea has gone out to Chronicle readers to help trace the accused, who could be anywhere in the country or abroad.

Police are determined to turn up the heat on suspected villains and are making efforts to bring those involved to court.

Northumbria Chief Constable Mr Craik said: "Absconders who are still out there should know that any effort to get away simply delays the inevitability of going to court.

"They still have the opportunity to hand themselves in - but we are stepping up our efforts and we will find them."

Hundreds of people wanted on warrant in the Northumbria force area either gave themselves up or were arrested earlier this year as part of Turn Up, a nationwide campaign to get tough on people who fail to make court appearances.

Around a third of all suspects subject to warrant are now back in the criminal justice system awaiting trial.

The five men are Paul James Connelly, 23, George Bernard Murray Hoolahan, 58, David Anthony Brown, 45, Gary Phillip Connor, 22, and John Renner Dillon, 40.

All sorts of measures have been used to track people who have skipped bail.

Northumbria Police carried out the mailshot as part of the national campaign Operation Turn Up, which targets outstanding warrants issued to those who fail to appear at court.

Last year letters were delivered to around 500 people who were subject to an outstanding warrant.

It offered the opportunity to surrender at a convenient time, but warned anyone who failed to attend court would be arrested and could ultimately be charged with an offence of absconding, which carries a maximum penalty of imprisonment.

One defendant in Greater Manchester was even arrested as he tried to use his Operation Turn Up letter telling him to give himself up as proof of identity during a job interview.

Fugitives who show contempt for the justice system are now being targeted by the courts in a crackdown.

The get-tough move comes as police and prosecutors work with magistrates to ease the stress on witnesses and victims turning up for trials.

Results in one court area of Tyneside have led to more cases going ahead than any other part of Northumbria - because offenders are scared of the consequences.

Suspects who mock the courts by failing to attend hearings cause delays and cost taxpayers millions of pounds.

The local Criminal Justice Board is now working towards bringing more offenders to justice and improving public confidence in the system.

In the past, a case could have been listed at Newcastle Magistrates' Court more than 20 times before a defendant was sent for trial or sentenced.

And most of the delays happen because those charged do not attend, forcing magistrates to adjourn proceedings time and time again at taxpayers' expense.

Out of 7,152 trials listed in 2002 in the Northumbria Magistrates' Courts Committee area, a staggering 2,347 were cancelled on the day. The authorities say a smaller number of people are accounting for a larger proportion of the crime.

"If somebody fails to appear, we lay an offence under the bail act immediately, prior to the arrest on a warrant," said one North Tyneside prosecutor.

"And then when they do attend we look far more vigorously at the reasons for non-attendance."

There are standard guidelines for the amount of costs. They differ if an accused pleads guilty immediately or whether a request is made for a full file from the police to go to trial.

North Tyneside leads the Northumbria area in the effective trials. The authorities say one of the reasons behind this is that defendants are more likely to turn up because they are aware of the consequences.

These suspects' photos are featured on the force website - www.northumbria.police.uk - as part of Chief Constable Craik's pledge on total policing.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of any of the five suspects should ring Northumbria Police on (0191) 214 6555 or 454 7555, or use the feedback form on the police website.

Police have a possible sighting of him in Nottingham.

He shows up later in a January 2008 report with more specifics about his past case...

On the run

MORE than 800 Tyneside fugitives are on the run from justice.

Figures obtained by the Chronicle reveal North East police have failed to arrest 833 people accused of committing crimes after warrants were issued by courts when they failed to turn-up.

And the figures show some alleged crooks have avoided justice for more than a decade, as there are arrest warrants issued in the 1990s that are still outstanding.

Using the Freedom of Information Act, we discovered that Northumbria Police has not yet tracked down 676 people made the subject of arrest warrants. Eleven of these people are wanted for sexual crimes.

And courts in the Durham Police area are still waiting to deal with 157 people, 18 of which are wanted for violent crimes, and two who are charged with sex offences.

Chief Insp Sean McKenna, of Northumbria Police Criminal Justice Department, said: “It is a priority to trace these people and we make every effort to bring them before the court.”

Chief Insp Dave Hogg, head of community justice for Durham Constabulary, said: “It is important to remember arrest warrants are graded, with those relating to serious offences obviously given a higher priority.

“We have carried out a number of operations in conjunction with the courts to track down those who are wanted and more of these are planned for the future.

“The Local Criminal Justice Board also looks on a regular basis at the systems and procedures for handling warrants.”

George Bernard Murray Hoolahan is just one of Northumbria Police’s most wanted.

The rape suspect has been on the run for almost 10 years after failing to appear at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on July 13, 1999.

Hoolahan was arrested and charged when two 18-year-old girls claimed he raped them.

The offences are alleged to have happened at a bed and breakfast in Whitley Bay, with Hoolahan having met them on a night out in March 1999. He vanished after magistrates granted him bail, despite objections from police.

Horrific double rapists once arrested are not let out with a "make sure you come to Court tomorrow..."

What was horrific about the rapes... were they tortured, mutilated, had he poor hygiene? Yes rape is horrific, but in journalism the word "horrific" connotes something far beyond the normal scenario.

Is Scotland known to simply let arrested, alleged rapists to go home for a good nights sleep? If the title "horrific" is used, at least have the courtesy to explain why....

People get set-up all the time, look at the recent charges against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. He was charged with rape one day, and the next day the charge was dropped... talk about an obvious setup. ; Though frankly I'm surprised that Assange has not been "accidentally" run over in a vehicular accident.

A recent story here about an aged man allegedly molested three girls over a long period of time and then the father alleged molestation. Real incident, or simple extortion?

I certainly don't want to minimize the charge of rape, but let's have some real facts and some quality journalism please.

I can't help but add in regarding the other info included in these articles... Has the apprehension of criminals with outstanding warrants improved dramatically from the times in these 2006 and 2008 reports?

They talk of hundreds of hundreds of wanted fugitives roaming free in what I presume is not a heavily populated area (please correct if that's wrong).

Is it really that bad in present-day UK?

The other information and numbers in these reports is staggering.

Separately I do note that the UK let a rapist out on bail; that sort of action would likely draw some Thai-bashing if it were to have occurred here. Never hurts to reinforce the reality that bad decisions are a world-wide phenomenon and not a Thai-exclusive trait.

Agreed, it was pretty sensationalist about Soi Cowboy. However, it is good to see that these people are being rounded up.

North's most wanted found in Bangkok bar

georgehoolahanbeforegoi.jpg

George Hoolahan before going on the run

Now Interpol are desperately trying to get Glasgow-born Hoolahan back to the North East to face trial for the alleged rape of the two 18-year-olds who claim he attacked them at a B&B in Whitley Bay in March 1999 after they met him on a night out.

At the time, Hoolahan was working on Tyneside as a director for Scottish company Fuel Negotiators.

He now works as a property development contractor, and splits his time between Bangkok and the paradise beaches of Cha-am on the coast.

He appears to have escaped detection by the authorities simply by dropping his surname and calling himself George Bernard or George Murray – both are middle names.

A few weeks ago, he fled his apartment at Sukhsan Mansion, in the up-market Sukhumvit area of the city, without paying off his rent arrears.

But he still appears to be living in the city and taking on fresh contracts for building work.

Northumbria Police confirmed they are now following up leads in Southeast Asia, and a spokesman said: “We received a report in July from a member of the Press suggesting that this individual was in Thailand.

“Northumbria Police is working with Interpol in relation to this report.”

Hoolahan, who was living with his 18-year-old girlfriend before he vanished, is also wanted by Strathclyde Police for questioning about a five-figure sum which went missing from his employers.

He is understood to have withdrawn around £70,000 from the bank account of the company, of which he was managing director, and disappeared with his £10,000 company car.

The cash loss forced the firm – which had previously come under fire from industry watchdogs for charging people trying to save money on their gas bills – into liquidation.

North's most wanted found in Bangkok bar

George Hoolahan at the Victoria Bar in Bangkok

LOUNGING in the midday sunshine, this is fugitive rape suspect George Hoolahan enjoying the high life in Thailand.

Hoolahan was tracked down by the Sunday Sun to the Thai capital of Bangkok where he has been living since fleeing justice more than 10 years ago.

The 61-year-old divorcee became one of the North’s Most Wanted after he slipped the net in 1999 as he was about to stand trial accused of raping two teenagers in the seaside resort of Whitley Bay, North Tyneside.

But days before he was due to stand trial he fled and simply vanished, until being tracked down to Bangkok where he spends days and nights in some of the capital’s seedier bars and clubs.

He’s a regular in the city’s notorious Soi Cowboy red light district, a strip of bars filled with go-go dancers and prostitutes, where bar managers say he can often be spotted sitting outside the Tilac - Thai for “Darling” - go-go bar.

One manager said: “He goes there because he knows the German owner, but he won’t come here again.

“There are some girls here who hide when they see him. He has been demanding services not normally on offer, so I think he has a power complex.”

We flushed him out by posing as a wealthy businessman wanting to recruit him to carry out a lucrative £1million refit of luxury penthouses.

We lured him to a meeting at a posh bar, and he turned up wearing white trousers and a pink polo shirt adorned with a picture of the MP5 machine gun used by the US Navy’s elite special forces teams.

But when we told him the deal was off and confronted him about his past he claimed: “That’s all cleared up now. It was only a date rape kind of thing.”

Since disappearing he has been reportedly sighted in London and Nottingham and Northumbria Police even featured him on BBC’s Crimewatch – but to no avail.

Wonder what his TVF account name is. This defense line to blame the female victims that sounds somewhat familiar. :bah:

Same like Soi Cowboy are for some TVF the place to go. Someone must know him.

Is that Hoolahan or Hooligan?

The word is out on the street that if you are a wanted fugitive or into the crime scene, Thailand is the place to go. It has replaced South America as a criminal destination and sanctuary.

The great mystery is, that when these low life's or other foreigners come to Thailand, how quickly they soon establish themselves, find ways to obtain incomes, disappear into the background and become born again hardly unchallenged.

For example, this Scotsman, he now works as a property development contractor they said. How did a wanted rapist and swindler manage that in Thailand?

When farangs decide to live in Thailand we come here as guests. I thought it was very difficult to own anything in Thailand, companies, businesses, bars, land and homes. So what gives? Doesn't the case of this rapist indicate that it is time for the police to do a sweep, pull them in and check them out. Or is it that the police consider immigration laws as a low priority on their lists and not putting any resources and real enforcement into the problem?

I believe the requirements for a rapist are 2 copies of a por bor tor, a medical certificate, proof of electrical bill payments for three months, and a certified letter from a reputable land owner.

For the other non-sex crime, I think it's slightly easier with just 3 copies of a sor por gor and certified copies of ATM withdrawal slips totaling 50,000 baht.

With those items together, he should have been able to become an official property development contractor, once the mandatory 10 day waiting period has passed.

Anyone wondering about his immigraion status? Let's start with the easiest question; His visa and work permit. If the man was on the lam, with a warrant issued for his arrest then a hold would have been put on his passport. Even if he had managed to leave Scotland in 1999 with a valid passport, it would have had to have been renewed during the past 11 years. Does anyone believe he has a valid passport? Ok, so let's work on the premise he doesn't have a valid passport. Does he or does he not have a valid visa? If he is working illegally and doesn't have a visa, he's going to have one heck of a stay in the immigration prison. On the other hand, if he was able to bribe various Thai officials, then the government is going to have to deal with the disgrace of a stinky corruption scandal. It is not reassuring that a violent dishonest slime ball like this is allowed to operate as a property developer, and yet, honest folks are shaken down every day because they made the mistake of picking up trash from the floor of the wife's bar.

Anyway, so when are the Thai police going to arrest this joker. or do they want him to escape so they don't have to explain the situation?

How did he manage his immigration requirements ?

Was he still on his original passport? and by doing so, has he overstayed for more than 10 years?

Or did he has a fake passport ?

Everybody living in Thailand need to show their passports in many occasions and will be checked by computers.

Patently not if you don't leave the country, and pay your way to visa renewals. A blue stamp in your passport is a blue stamp in your passport. It never needs to be recorded in the system if it a dodgy stamp.

It isn't as though fake passports are hard to come by in Thailand either, there are stories every couple of months about another ring being busted here and there.

The amount of photocopies taken of passports in Thailand opens the possibility up wide open. What do they do with all the paper?

The system is corrupt, face it.

Garbage journalism.

Yeah, rape is and should be a crime, but the headline makes it sound like they caught the likes of Jeffrey Dahmer. Even the money he bunked off with isn't all that impressive an amount. This put him on the international 'most wanted' lists?

But he was left reeling after we tracked him down to his Thai bolthole, where he hangs out in a sleazy sex-for-sale bar.

Yawn, another Tawdry Thailand Tale. As we all know, all they had to say is bar, the rest is redundant. What bar in this country does not have some sort of recreation available?

All the same, it's good they cleaned up this trash. And some hack reporter can now feel like a first-class investigative journalist.

What an absolute piece of garbage, terribly sensationalist, exaggerated, hyped, and stretching of the truth. Yet another article that attempts to make Thailand out to be some kind of mystical world of crime, murder, and human sacrifice or some stuff a b-rated hollywood movie would try to do.

Talk about a whole list of poorly written sentences, here are but a few, taken out of the article completely untouched, as is:

"They weer on drugs and we went back to my room.

"When made contact, I knew right away it was suspicious but I thought it was a cop.

"You can find anyone in the world If you hadn't found me, the police probably wouldn't have bothered their a**e."

UPDATE

Most Wanted: Fugitive Scot Found Hiding in Bangkok

Wanted in both England and Scotland on a rape charge and over his part in a financial scam, fugitive Scottish national George Hoolahan has been on the run for more than 10-years. Despite being one of Britain’s “most wanted” men Hoolahan has successfully evaded capture by the authorities, that is until he was found holed-up in Bangkok following an investigation by the UK media recently.

Bangkok, the 22nd of August 2010: George Bernard Murray Hoolahan [61], going under the names George Bernard or George Murray to avoid detection, is wanted in connection with the rape of two teenage girls in the seaside resort of Whitley Bay in the north of England. Scottish authorities also want him for his part in an alleged financial scam and theft of over £70,000 from former employers Fuel Negotiators.

Hoolahan skipped a court appearance in 1999 over the rape charges, which he claims “have been dealt with,” before it is thought that he fled to Thailand where he has remained, posing as a property developer and refurbishment contractor on high-end condominium projects, for over a decade.

Rape case fugitive George Hoolahan in Thailand

Looks well for 60 in that pic

The first pic is when he ran off, he would have been around 49 in it.

The second pic is 2010, and IMHO doesn't necessary look well for 60, but rather, has a typical appearance for that age.
