Immigration police commissioner gets the push

BANGKOK: -- Amarin Niamsakul has been removed from the post of Immigration Police Bureau commissioner, allegedly due to widespread corruption and the unit's poor performance.

A police source said the removal order was signed yesterday by national police chief Pol Gen Kowit Wattana following expressions of dissatisfaction with the unit by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The source said that Pol Lt-Gen Amarin has been appointed acting commissioner of the Police Forensic Science Bureau, replacing Pol Lt-Gen Thavornsak Thepchatri who was earlier moved, on a temporary basis, to perform duties at the Royal Thai Police Office. In the same order, Pol Maj-Gen Suwat Thamrongsrisakul, deputy chief of the Special Branch Police, has been appointed acting commissioner of the Immigration Police Bureau.

Mr Thaksin recently spoke of problems at immigration checkpoints, where illegal immigrants were allowed into the country.
