Swine Flu In Thailand

I cannot find a lot about this subject, and when, it's mostly old. Only in Bangkok Post: "H1N1 flu death toll now 245" at August 17. And "The department said 38 people were confirmed to have been infected with the H1N1 virus during the period of July 25-Sept 7." (of this year).

Well, scaring is that the day before yesterday two normal healthy people (Thai) in their thirties fellt all of a sudden ill (Bangkok), in a such a way that they wanted to visit a doctor (so here, as there are no family-docters) the hospital. It wasn't a real "social security" hospital but one with a higher standard. They were sent home to cure, with the answer that it is flew, got the well known plastic bags with medicines and went. Yesterday-night the fever went up-to 40 degrees and, again, up to the hospital where Swine flew was diagnosed. As there were no rooms (I mean the normal higher standard rooms, not the "social" rooms; the answer was that they where fully "booked". They had to stay in emergency until the female had the "luck" after a couple of hours to get a just emptied room late in the night.

Family phoned at least ten "normal" hospitals and everywhere the same: full. Only Bangkok Hospital and Samitivej could offer only one room of arount 10.000 Baht per night. Questioning the hospitals the answer was that they were full with Swine Flu-patients.........

Not necessary to mention that the "social" hospitals were not phoned because for sure no chance, and for such cases there seems to be a lot reserved for officials and higher ranked people.

Is the "radio-silence" a result of not knowing what to do at higher level, covering-up or too bussy in trying to catch a certain person?? When they report a bit more than one month ago to have confirmed 38 people infected than one can speak about a sudden explosion in my humble opinion.

And, before answers that the phoned hospitals were not the good ones: MAO, Ladphrao, Sympheat, Whiphawadee, Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej, Kassemrat, Noperath.

Now the result is that the female has an eight-bedded room at the children's department and the male went home!

I've wondered if there is something going around. We've had a high rate of absenteeism at our school and a very unusually large number of Thai teachers out sick--and they don't take sick leave unless they are at death's doorstep, because they get a nice cash bonus for not being sick.

It's hard to tell without firm data since the flu is around as well as dengue fever.

I'm hearing there's been a fair number of cases lately in the NE with health workers now being vaccinated.

Some earlier news reports dated 8th and 10th August.

And another dated 10th August from the public health minister saying the spread is normal.

That means that I had the latest info! " from the public health minister saying the spread is normal " ; that means, together with my current experience that they have to enlarge the Bangkok hospitals fast!!

I thought that after all the fuss and panic last time, it was finally concluded that H1N1 was a pretty tame flu, as flus go. Thousands of people die every  year from flu and millions get ill, so why should we be alarmed to know that this relatively mild flu is back? Your two healthy friends got the flu, felt rough, stayed off work and went to the doctors (which is normal with the flu) and providing it is H1N1 they will get over it. No need to panic.

no, no, sabai sabai!

"The Amnat Charoen educational zone office yesterday instructed dozens of education officials who were diagnosed with the type-A (H1N1) influenza during a nine-day seminar in an Ubon Ratchathani hotel last week to stay at home and separate from family members to prevent the disease spreading."

What a fuss!!! But they are only panicking I suppose.

Well, in the mean (last night) time two others in our circle has been admitted to hospitals. But again, don't fuss around and sabai sabai! It should be good when the authorities should produce regurally (honest) updated reports!

Virus may be re-emerging : ministry warns

Dengue fever is far more rampant than swine flu with many provinces seeing up to and over an 80% jump in cases. And, I suspect, far more people die from dengue than from swine flu.

the whole and only issue was that one has been confronted with lots of cases in the surroundings and hospitals full and nothing in the press. One should expect that with at least ten hospitals full (and there are more) any issue published!

A lot of H1N1 and Dengue fever cases are covered up because it may affect tourism which is starting to recover from the political problems at the beginning of th year. The last thing TAT want is adverse publicity waring tourists not to travel because of these problems. Most of the hospitals or Doctors will tell you that at least 40% of hospital beds are taken up with people suffering from the these illnesses. You should read the guidelines issued by the Embassy of your country as they seem to have up to date imformation

Thanks for the informative post by the OP...

Indeed, it confirms what a medical source told me recently, that the hospitals around BKK are full and full of patients with possible or suspected H1N1....and nothing from the government until the announcement the other day....

Dengue fever may also be a problem of course. But at least around BKK, the hospitals aren't filing up with people with dengue symptoms, they're filling up with people with flu symptoms...

Until recently, I too had thought H1N1 was old, past news... Apparently, that assumption was premature, at least around these parts.

My wife is a guide and had clients cancel the trip because of swineflu. They were quarantined and could not go on the trip. So it is more widespread then they are letting on.

This was not an excuse because they lost money on it.

read topic techno!

We all are used to "covering up" in the mean time I think....

Now my wife (the fifth one in the near family - Bangkok) is admitted in the hospital. Now I'm waiting for my conviction. Unfortunately I'm the oldest.

I just added to the topic others already agreed on it. Just gave an other example with my opinion now tell me what was wrong with that. And what the hel_l does techno means.

I think you misunderstand somewhere something: techno: " The last thing TAT want is adverse publicity waring tourists not to travel because of these problems."
