Quite a good summary of the situation on Koh Chang in this article from the English language newspaper who's name cant be mentioned on Thaivisa.

The first paragraph kind of encapsulates the problems here:

'Frequent visitors to Koh Chang like to joke about a beach road that is permanently flooded. The absurdity of the problem is that the muddy pool of water is caused by a bitter row between two local administrative officials, one of whom blocked the drainage channel in front of the office of his adversary.'

The Chaweng-ification of White Sand Beach is well underway.

Very sad. I was there a few months ago. I have not been there for about 5 years. I was shocked at the new construction. A real mess. Narrow roads, heavy traffic, no parking...very sad. It is so easy to fix these issues...but with lax regulation and corruption...nothing will happen...

Having spent over a month on Koh Chang now :bah: , I have to concur that this place is rotten to the core, and will end up the same way as Samui.
