UNICEF Urges Thailand To Crack Down On Porn

Thailand is a Buddhist country.

There is no porn in Thailand, let alone child porn.

Agree and disagree

england's a christian country. christains don't have porn. infact neither does any religion. i don't know why Thailand has to use the religous card for normal adult porn. confused!! then again if all porn is illegal then Thailand is number 1 for not promoting child sex through porn.

If they want to stop it they should go for the people who buy it and for the protectors of the children who look the other way and receive cash !

What does religion have to do with doing wrong? The jails in the US are full of Born Again Christians and Muslims. The Catholic church seems to have got a reputation for molesting little boys. And as for Thailand ... Buddhists represent 95% of the population and I doubt even 5% are distributing child porn. Not to mention Buddhism is a much different belief system than a typical God based religion. Although a Buddhist should not lie, they also should not kill. If a Buddhist lies to save a life it is considered both a bad and good act. Although a Buddhist should not be involved in immoral sex, a working girl supporting her family could easily see the good out weighing the bad since kindness and giving are very good attributes to a good Buddhist.

Grant it, I cannot see a valid rationale in selling Child Porn but people through out history have done terrible things including having killed and slaughtered many people all in the name of their loving God. Point is some people twist their claimed belief system all the time (in all beliefs) to rationalize doing bad. This has nothing to do with religion but all to do with a person's moral character. Pointing out a bad person who claims to have higher beliefs certainly should not condemn all the people who do try their best to adhere to those higher beliefs.

It makes no sense to condemn an entire group for the actions of a few.

I use to be working in a company who was fundraising for unicef. We was invitet to come and see 1 of there offices in copenhagen. I know alot about the NGO world, so i only had 1 quistion, to find out what was must importent for them helping children and there political agenda.

I know they did not agree with the danish party called Dansk folke parti, so i asked if Dansk Folke Parti would give you 1 million kroner, with no string attach, but only so they would be able to use unicef logo on there homepage like everyone else who gives fund to unicef. There director of communication said NO, so i resigned my job uden the meet with unicef where my boss was too. i said i cant help you get money when your political agenda is more importent than the children.

The only way to have any chance of seeing this being taken care of is to attack the issue with non-enforcement the only way that matters here:

- Publicly shame the general of each police station that fail to clean up the sidewalks from unlicensed sellers and in specific those that peddle child porn.

Place them infront of a tv camera, infront of a panel, standing (not sitting down) and ask them "there has now been 30 days after the report of this was published in the paper, why are you useless at your work? You will be given 14 more days and after that you will be stripped of one rank and lose your position."

And them infront of tv cameras do the followup and strip the stripes of his shoulders.

Loss of face is the ONLY thing that seemingly matters for males here.

So use that knowledge...

There is porn all over the show! And it is a double whammy because it's all coppies.

I have to say though that I have never seen child porn while walking around! But then again I don't look for it.

Saw some dildos today in Silom! (Oh so you were looking for a dildo then?)

And a few hookers! (I just know you were looking for them)

Hookers? Dildos Thailand? Whatever next? reeaweeeeeee? Where??? I was under the impression that the 2 houses of ill repute in Soi 6 Pattaya had been closed down by the police recently.

Thus eliminating the Hooker problem in Thailand. I need to get out more.

A good idea and actually not so far fetched, now that the issue is creeping into gradually wider media circles.

I've never seen or even heard of child porn being sold on Sukhumvit until the other week when I read the news and I live in lower Sukhumvit.

Not something you go looking for but knowing Bangkok it would be common knowledge if it was rife.

As far as them selling adult porn goes it's every 50-100 yds someome is flogging it.

Cleaning up those stalls that sell adult videos would be aimed at protecting who? The middle aged Farang holdaymakers? Like they need it

I wonder who else UNISEF are having ago at because as far as I can see Thailand blocks more porn sites than any European country.

Last Friday, a friend from Singapore and myself were doing some bar hopping. As we decided to go waking up towards Burger King, we were approached by XXX DVD sales boys working all along Silom area, on both sides of the road. They asked my friend if he liked Young Boy and showed him some of the covers and both of use quickly got away. We were then again approached by another man advertising the same thing. We told him, we're not interested.

As we turned around and headed in the opposite direction, toward Pat pong. Some old man asked us, you want young boy or girl to play with.

Just then, Silom was closed off. A whole caravan of police cars, security van's and so on. Right in the middle was a tan colored car with one of the royal family members. My friend and I played out respect to whoever was in the car. The old man, continued to try to pawn off some young boy or girl for sex. I then pointed to the old man, the royal family. He said, who cares, we own this part of town and proceeded to point to the police standing guard.

After that episode, my respect for Thai in that area just went into the gutter. To do such a shameful act in front of a member of the Royal family or even to any royal family is complete disregard in any society. My friend stated the same thing about Thai to; they lack respect and don't deserve respect in any way, shape of form.

So, how can any Thai in that area, doing business in that way which is considered by most to be one of the lowest forms of illigal business, be asked to be respected. Clearly, why didn't they just flip off the car as it went buy, that's the same thing. Clearly, the police on patrol don't care either to enforce a level of morality or standards there.

If you did not report such crime to the police, you must be lying.

I Dont normally post.

I usually take a "when in Rome" attitude.

But my goat has been got by this article.

I assume its farang tourists who are the customers for the child porn (or at least the majority).

If someone can find an honest policeman, or department to take this on, I will gladly donate a day per month to act as the farang stool pigeon to approach the vendors.

As long as the child porn peddlers get jail time.

Why cant the airport officials find it on the way out of Thailand.

Come to think of it, why cant the airport officials of the country being returned to find it either.

Anyway, thats my rant for the next 6 months over with.

Thailand doesn't generally search luggage on departure. Depending on the country of course if luggage is searched at the destination, of course they CAN find that stuff, and I'm sure they sometimes do.

It never helps reporting anything to the police, it will only make more problem for your self.

I'm not quit sure whether you're more pissed off with the old vendor selling child pornography or that he and no doubt many others are doing it regardless of whether the royal family are but a spit away or what?

Inmysights, you choosed your name wisely, it says it all. Elshaheen looks at it from a different angle. Somebody with morals is expressing his/her feelings towards respectless and rude behaviour of people without any level of morality. What is wrong about this??

you're quite wrong about reporting anything to the police and 'getting nothing done'. another urban myth put about by expats here. you have a problem, go file a police report. there is still of couse the tea money aspect but this isn't as in you face as say, bali.

by thev way, i don't understand why none of you have cottoned on yet, but 'chantorn' is a wind up. and a very fine job he's doing of it too.

On the other closed thread, we had a report from someone who approached a tourist policeman to report open sales of kiddie porn in Pattaya and was rebuffed, saying it was a waste of time as they would get a 200 baht fine, and be back the next day selling the same stuff. Urban myth, eh?

Good on UNICEF. Think that will actually help though? What power does UNICEF have over internal problems in Thailand? Urging? Where's the teeth?

I agree. Wheres the teeth? UNICEF is, after all, a United Nations group so it looks like the children are in their own this time.

Dont make the UN threaten the perverts.....again....and again......

Posted

Maybe UNICEF, aka, United Nations can initiate a multi-national trade embargo on paper and plastic to limit porn's incessant rampage.

Clueless, teethless, brainless, hapless, friendless wonders of the UN.......

Why did ThaiVisa decide to remove the word "Child" from the title of this thread.

Please ThaiVisa - grow a set of balls.

Title says "Crack down on porn" but article is about child pornography. Two completely different things.

Child pornography is bad, period. It's about ethical values, which are universal.

Adult porn is illegal in Thailand but legal in other countries. Moral values depend on the culture.

Please let's not mix the two up. The UNICEF report is clearly about child pornography, not about pornography in general.

I think UNICEF forgot to add that as well as cracking down on porn, Thailand needs equally to tackle and deal with the substantial number of Farang paedophiles living in the country. Preferably, I would like to see the Thai authorities produce a television programme to expose these parasites like they did in America called "To Catch A Predator": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwFr_VcGMKQ To deal with the problem in this way, would not only help to protect children from these perverts, it would as well raise awareness of foreign child molesters in Thailand and beyond.

OK, so a troll then - either way, not the real thoughts of a real person...

No, her posts over a long period time show that she is one of the Thais who wears blinders.

Correct, best to ignore her. Even writing this I am giving attention and time she doesn't deserve.
