WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- President Barack Obama on Monday signed a bill to designate an icefield and the highest unnamed peak in the State of Alaska as the "Ted Stevens Icefield" and "Mount Stevens", respectively, after the late Senator Ted Stevens.

The White House said Obama signed into law the the "Mount Stevens and Ted Stevens Icefield Designation Act" for the veteran senator, who was killed in a small plane crash on August 10.

Sen. Stevens was among five people killed when a 1957-build DeHavilland DHC-3 Otter aircraft went down about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Dillingham, crashing into a mountain.

The legislation was introduced by Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski.
