U.S. and Turkey sign Science and Technology agreement

2010-10-21 05:08:25 GMT+7 (ICT)

WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- The United States and Turkey on Wednesday signed a Science and Technology agreement which replaces the earlier 1994 document, the U.S. State Department announced.

The agreement marks an important milestone in the U.S.-Turkish scientific cooperation. It will provide a legal framework for increased agency-to-agency collaboration across a broad range of scientific disciplines.

The new agreement will deepen and diversify relations between the two countries by facilitating the undertaking of joint cooperative research projects; exchanges for scientists, specialists and researchers; and the establishment of science-based public-private partnerships.

In addition, the Science and Technology Agreement will allow the sharing of facilities, equipment and materials for scientific collaboration between the United States and Turkey.

The bilateral scientific cooperation will focus in areas like earthquake early warning and preparedness, environmental science, climate change, renewable energy, health, archeology, material science and chemistry.

Scientific collaboration is only one facet of the U.S.-Turkish bilateral relationship. The new agreement was envisioned after President Barack Obama's visit to Turkey in 2009.
