seems like most people are using Garmin and Tom Tom...i'm just curious to know, why aren't there many people using Leona GPS? It comes with ESRI map and has different language and loads of other functions like junction view....Is there any reason why it's not so popular? Just curious to know because I'm using Leona and I'm happy with it so far. Just wondering if there's any flaws with it that I'm not aware of, or is it just that the brand isn't popular?

It really doesn't matter what brand of GPS you have. The difference is whatever map you have. I have the Rotweiler map, the Garmin SE Asia map, the Nokia map and the Google map. I don't have the Tom Tom map so I can't comment. I have posted the detail from what I consider the best map which I consider the native ESRI map to be.

I could certainly be wrong but until someone can show me that their map has the most detail, I will continue to believe that I am using the best available. I think that no other map has the detail that the ESRI map has. I think that all the other maps are inferior to the Thai ESRI map.

i seeee..thanks for sharing :)

but the hardware also makes a difference doesn't it? if the hardware isn't sensitive enough or doesn't have very good reception etc, then the good map will not be able to function at its best?

The map does not function, it is merely a collection of digital data for the GPS hardware to use. If a particular village or road is not in the map digital data, then no amount of signal strength, sensitivity, or GPS bells and whistles will help you locate them.

Ah, got it :)

So if I bought a unit in the UK how much would it cost to buy the ESRI map - presume it is straightforward to load?

Garmin dealers in Thailand sell the ESRI map for 2,000 baht, map updates cost much less for Thailand purchased units. Have the dealer install the English language map. NOTE: Thai OS junction view does not work with foreign purchased units.

The garmin instructed me to keep in a left lane and exit Rama IV where as the TomTom told me not to, I had this issue last time i went to the embassy with the Garmin and it was then a ball ache to get there so I knew not to turn off but as I had recently downloaded the maps for my tomtom I thought I would give it a run as well.

AND

I said it told me to get off at the wrong exit, like your garmin mine to plotted a direct route to the embassy but when it directed me off it had to adjust the route, did you drive to the embassy using yours, the TomTom told my to keep in the right lane where as the Garmin told me to stay in the left lane which of-course was the exit lane.

AND

Yeah the Garmin steered me off the elevated road to drive under neath it, I'll stick with the tomtom, I prefer it's UI anyways.

Reads like you were "blinkered by TomTom" to me.

Reads to me like me the TomTom was the superior unit on the given route, given that should we conclude that the TomTom is the best GPS in Thailand ?

Spoonman, does your Tom Tom map show the detail that my Garmin ESRI map shows? I have not seen a Tom Tom map so I really don't know.

To be honest I don't know, I have only ever used it for street based guidance rather than an actual street map so I have not looked through its various menu's.

Somewhere in the find menu there should be an option for coordinates. Enter the coordinates and then view map. It will show you exactly where those coordinates are. I often get coordinates from friend when traveling somewhere new. Even if they find their coordinates from Google Earth, they usually get me close enough.

Nice blog sunnyhor but

Bring soap, shampoo or any bathing equipments with you. Most petrol kiosk in Thailand have bathrooms to shower. Once you feel tired, take a shower at the kiosk. Free of charge

I fear that anybody who's following your info to the letter in planning their trip is going to be sorely disappointed re the above or traveling in an alternative universe Thailand than the one I inhabit. :D

Here is one of the reasons that I like the ESRI map. This is an example of the detail. The no name village is called Nong Gik. This is the only map I have seen that shows the small streets. If the Tom Tom map shows the same streets, I'll have to say that it is a good map. The coordinates are shown at the bottom of the image;

ADDED - If I give someone the coordinates for my home, they will need to see these small streets to navigate.

Hi Gary,

I have an old Garmin 200W and one 1490 Pro with Bluetooth ecoroute and an Iphone with Tomtom.

The street level on the newest Tomtom map is not much different to the Garmin map but not as much POI.

Because both my Garmin units are from Europe there is no junction view, Tomtom maps are with junction view in BKK, where I use the navigation mostly. The newer Garmin units are quicker with the GPS reception then the Iphone especially in between high buildings and the screen is bigger. On the plus side Iphone connects via Bluetooth to car stereo so music and navigation voice and Phone running all over the car speaker.

If ESRI would open the junction view for the Import units I would say Garmin is the winner, but they like to charge a premium price on there outdated Garmin hardware so they probably will not open that function soon.

Must be a Thai thing, you remember the early '90 ? They did the same thing with mobile phones...

A few years ago an ESRI map, not the painless editions  was around 10.000 THB, which was ridiculous expensive. Only because of the competition ESRI was forced to lower the prices on there maps.

I hope Tomtom gets a good market share because that'll improve the customer situation.

Here is one Thai driver who really is in need of a good navigation system...

Thanks for the information. I have two Garmin Nuvis. One is a 750 and the other is an 855. The 855 is capable of junction view but unfortunately it doesn't work with the ESRI map. Both these units have an audio plug as well as FM transmitters. I can use my car sound system to listen to books and route directions.

I am quite disappointed with the new Garmin models. They are no longer capable of playing Audible books or MP3 books and music. It appears to me that Garmin is going backwards.

uwe_rayong,

The map detail shown on your TomTom map is a bit lacking when compared to the ESRI map Gary A attached, and of course the POIs are missing. One may conclude that the ESRI map, in this comparison, is the superior product. Thanks for supplying the information.

Thanks for the comment mate, but I don't really get what you mean? Sorry for being so noob as my info was what I did during the road trip. Pardon me, thanks!

Sorry for the misunderstanding but in all my time traveling the length and breadth of Thailand I've yet to see a petrol station with showering facilities. They may exist for sure as naturally I haven't visited every gas station in the country therefore I could not possibly say but they must be rarer than hens' teeth as opposed to most stations having them. In most stations it's hit or miss whether the crapper is sanitary enough to use! :)

Somehow agree, but MOST of the kiosk, they do have shower facilities. Some build behind the toilet next to each other, and some are a few metres behind the kiosk itself.

PTT, SHELL & CALTEX, they do have this!!! I use those facilities 3 times during my drive. It's up to you whether you willing to ust it or not!!!

Let me prove to you that my infos are not just a Blog, it's a sharing and guiding one too... just scroll down this link, and you will see the bath room! http://roadtriptothailand.blogspot.com/2011/07/day-4.html

Here is the shower:

I don't know why, but this shower beams pictures like this in my head:

I would only use the shower, if I found the toilette to late

OMG.....sorry to see this. You mean your feet rot after you shower from the toilet posted? I shower there too, but everythings okay!!??

Thanks mate! I agree it's not that up to standard, but there are bathrooms for shower. Most peolple will not use it because they don't drive that far. For me it's like a marathon drive, as you see my Blog you will know. I drove a thousand over km per day, if I feel tired, I will just stop at any petrol kiosk for a shower.

That is why I have shower cream, shampoos and towels with me! My 2 cents worth!

Sorry sunnyhor,

very interesting and informative blog, but I have to agree with uwe_rayong on this one.

The Toilets and showers which are normally part of Petrol Stations really don't look that inviting. But of course there are exceptions to the rule.

(For example there is a Shell station on the way from Patters to Chantaburi, the toilets there are meticulously clean. Next time I go there I will post the coordinates as this is the GPS forum
