Hi

I drove down from Udon to Bangkok on Friday and the roads were pretty treacherous to say the least.

Things have deteriorated somewhat since then and I'm due to drive back tomorrow (Friday 22nd)

The Thai news doesn't seem to give any information about the main road (Highway 2).

Can anyone tell me if it's safe to drive at the moment?

Thanks

I came to Udon on Tuesday, highway 2 was not bad only saw some flooding before Nakon Ratchima but the Nakon Ratchima bypass road was 2 feet deep for about 2 km's and took 1/2 hour to get through those 2 km's. I plan on going back on Saturday keep me posted on how the trip went for you on Friday. Do you do the bypass or go through town.

I'll keep you posted.

I normally go the bypass way but I saw on the news that it was safer to go through Korat.

I haven't seen any news on that particular stretch of road in the last couple of days so am assuming it will be OK??

From what I've read on the local forum and talking to friends the bypass is a safer bet at the moment. Coming through town on the 2 is limited to high profile vehicles while cars can get through on the bypass. The water has been quite deep between the Pegasus hotel just past Mackro and the main junction in Joho. From what I've heard currently the water's max depth on the bypass is a foot deep or 25cm by the new court house.

bob4you....

I left Chong Nonsi at 9am and arrived in Udon at 7pm

The only bad spots were the bypass at Korat which wasn't too deep, about 8 inches but it took 2 hours to get through the 6km stretch and another little stretch about 50 kms before Koen Khen which was about the same in depth and down to one lane.

So, it's safe to drive but it took 10 hours instead of 7-8. Not too bad considering...
